Chapter 5 - THE DANCE AT PIER 9

The following evening, the deception was elevated to an international level.
The annual Maritime Gala at Pier 9 was the premier event for the city's elite shipping moguls, corrupt politicians, and undercover mob bosses.
Adrian and Julian arrived together in a custom dark blue limousine. Julian wore a fitted charcoal velvet suit that highlighted his lean athletic build, while Adrian wore an all-black tuxedo that made him look like a reigning king of shadows.
As they walked down the red carpet into the grand glass pavilion overlooking the harbor, reporters and society bloggers swarmed the velvet ropes.
"Mr. Moretti! Is it true that you and Mr. Vance have been secretly seeing each other for months?" a reporter yelled, thrusting a microphone forward.
Adrian didn't answer with words. Instead, he stopped in the middle of the carpet, wrapped his arm around Julian's waist, and pulled him flush against his chest.
Julian felt his heart skip a beat at the sudden, overpowering warmth of Adrian's body.
Adrian leaned down, his dark eyes locked onto Julian's lips before he whispered loud enough for the microphone to catch: "Our private life is not for sale."
The camera strobes flashed wildly, creating a blinding wall of white light!
Inside the pavilion, the atmosphere was electric.
Don Falcone sat at a VIP table near the waterfront windows, flanked by five heavily armed bodyguards. When he saw Adrian and Julian enter arm-in-arm, his weathered face twisted in anger.
"They're putting on a show," Falcone grunted to his lieutenant. "Find out if Vance is sleeping at the Moretti estate tonight. I want to know if this relationship is real or a tactical maneuver."
Across the room, the orchestra began playing a slow, sweeping waltz.
Adrian looked down at Julian, extending his hand with a challenging smirk playing on his lips. "May I have this dance, fiancé?"
Julian looked at Adrian's hand, then at Falcone watching them from thirty feet away.
"You're enjoying this way too much, Moretti," Julian murmured, placing his hand in Adrian's.
"I'm executing a plan, Vance," Adrian replied, pulling Julian out onto the center marble dance floor.
As they began to move together to the rhythm of the music, the room seemed to fade away. Despite the years of separation and the deep family rivalries between them, their movements were remarkably synchronized.
Adrian guided Julian effortlessly across the floor, his hand firm on Julian's back, his chest pressed against Julian's shoulder.
"You remember the waltz?" Adrian asked quietly, his breath warm against Julian's neck.
"My father made me take lessons when I was fourteen," Julian whispered, looking up into Adrian’s dark, intense eyes. "Just in case I ever had to dance with a mobster's son."
Adrian chuckled—a low, genuine sound that Julian realized he hadn't heard in twelve years.

"You play a convincing partner, Julian," Adrian said, his gaze dropping to Julian's mouth for a brief, genuine moment. "So convincing that I'm starting to forget this is fake."
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs—not out of fear, but out of something far more dangerous that was beginning to blossom between them.
