Chapter 5 - The Mask Comes Off

Silence stretched across the phone line, so absolute that Charles could hear the soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner of his study.

"W-what?" Charles stammered, his brain struggling to process the statement. "What did you say?"

"Northbridge Capital is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vance Global Enterprises," I explained, each word delivered with surgical precision. "My father was Arthur Vance. Upon his passing, the voting control of the firm transferred entirely to my mother, Eleanor Vance, and myself."

Vanessa, who was leaning close to the phone’s speaker, gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"No..." Charles whispered, his voice cracking. "No, that’s impossible. Arthur Vance’s family lived in New York! They were reclusive billionaires! Your mother... your mother was wearing a ten-dollar gray dress!"

"My mother wears what she pleases because she has nothing to prove to shallow, insecure sycophants like you," I replied coldly. "She lives with dignity, not display. For two years, I watched you brag about your wealth while your company bled cash from every vein. I instructed Northbridge to quietly absorb your debt because I believed, foolishly, that I was going to become your son-in-law. I was going to forgive those loans as a wedding present to Vanessa."

Vanessa let out a strangled sob. "Daniel... please! I didn't know! I swear I didn't know!"

"That’s the point, Vanessa," I said, my tone turning sharp as a razor. "You didn't know who she was, so you felt entitled to degrade her. You thought she was weak, poor, and defenseless, so you used her for cheap entertainment. You only care now because you realize the person you stepped on has the power to crush you."

"Daniel, wait!" Charles pleaded, his arrogance completely shattered, his voice turning into a frantic whimper. "We are family! Or we were about to be! We can fix this! I will down on my knees and beg your mother for forgiveness! I will transfer thirty percent of Whitmore Holdings equity directly to her name!"

"Whitmore Holdings won't exist by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Charles," I said evenly. "At 6:00 AM, the sheriff’s department will serve the emergency eviction notice for the estate. At 7:00 AM, the stock exchange will open, and our liquidation announcement will trigger a complete freeze on your shares. At 8:00 AM, Northbridge receivers will arrive to seize the assets."

"You can't do this to us!" Vanessa screamed into the phone, her composure dissolving into ugly panic. "I loved you! We spent two years together!"

"You loved the idea of a humble assistant you could control," I replied. "You loved having someone to handle your family’s dirty work while treating him like a subordinate. Goodbye, Vanessa."

"Daniel, wait! Don't hang up! DANIEL!" Charles shouted.

I ended the call and placed the phone on the heavy oak desk of my father’s private study at the Vance compound.

Beside me, my mother sat in a plush armchair, wrapped in a warm cashmere shawl, holding a cup of herbal tea. She looked at me with a mixture of quiet sadness and profound strength.

"Is it done, Danny?" she asked softly.

"It’s started, Mom," I said, walking over to sit beside her. "By sunrise, they will understand the weight of what they did."

May you like

She reached out and rested her hand over mine. "I don't care about their money or their houses, son. I only care that you see people for who they truly are."

"I see them now," I said. "And tomorrow, the whole world will see them too."
