Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Three months later.
The summer sun shone warmly over a five-acre plot of land in the heart of the city—a plot that had previously been earmarked by Whitmore Holdings for an exclusive, private luxury club.
Today, however, the land was filled with hundreds of people, banners, and flower arrangements.
My mother stood at the center of a newly constructed ribbon-cutting stage, wearing a simple blue dress. Behind her stood a state-of-the-art community facility featuring a free adult education center, a senior wellness clinic, and a vocational training workshop.
Above the entrance, carved in brushed brass letters, was the name: The Eleanor Vance Foundation for Community Dignity.
I stood beside her, watching as local residents, families, and community leaders cheered as she cut the bright red ribbon with a pair of golden scissors.
After the ceremony, my mother and I walked through the peaceful gardens behind the center.
"This is much better than a luxury estate, Danny," she said, smiling as she watched a group of senior citizens enjoying tea near a fountain.
"It was built using the liquidated assets of Whitmore Holdings," I replied with a warm smile. "Every cent Charles Whitmore tried to hoard is now funding education and healthcare for people who actually need it."
"And what about Vanessa?" she asked quietly.
I took a quiet breath, looking out across the garden. "Rebecca updated me yesterday. Charles accepted a plea deal—he’ll be serving eight years in federal prison. Vanessa lost everything in the civil forfeitures. She’s currently working as a junior receptionist at an auto repair shop on the south side, living in a studio apartment."
"Do you feel hatred for them?" Eleanor asked, looking into my eyes.

"No," I answered honestly. "Hatred requires energy, Mom. They aren't worth it. I only feel relief that we showed the world that wealth without character is nothing more than a polished trash heap."
She patted my arm affectionately. "You're a good son, Daniel. Your father would be proud."
