Chapter 7 - Public Exposure

By 8:00 AM, the financial world was in an uproar.
The morning markets opened to a devastating announcement from Vance Global Enterprises. The press release was short, direct, and devastating:
Vance Global Enterprises, through its subsidiary Northbridge Capital, announces the complete restructuring and immediate asset liquidation of Whitmore Holdings due to systemic fraud, severe debt non-compliance, and insolvency. All underlying commercial operations have been assumed by Northbridge.
Attachment to the press release was a high-definition video link.
It wasn't a corporate presentation. It was the complete, unedited footage recorded by the wedding drone the day before.
The video clearly captured Charles Whitmore standing on the terrace, glass of champagne in hand, laughing as he shouted, "Look at that pathetic poor woman!" It showed Vanessa smiling under her cathedral veil, holding the garden hose, and blasting freezing water directly into the face of an elderly woman. It showed the guests laughing, the string quartet stopping, and finally, my intervention as I stepped between them, removed my ring, and declared the wedding over.
Below the video, a simple caption read: The woman targeted in this video is Eleanor Vance, co-founder and major shareholder of Vance Global Enterprises. Humanity is a prerequisite for partnership.
Within twenty minutes, the video went viral across every major social media platform and news network in the country.
Financial news anchors were stunned.
"In a shocking turn of events," a Bloomberg anchor reported, "it appears the sudden collapse of Whitmore Holdings was triggered not by market forces, but by a catastrophic display of cruelty by its executive leadership. Charles Whitmore and his daughter, Vanessa, unknowingly humiliated the matriarch of one of the private wealth families in North America."
On social media, the backlash was instantaneous and violent. The hashtag #JusticeForEleanor trended at number one worldwide. Boycotts were launched against any company remotely associated with the Whitmore name. High-society figures who had attended the wedding and laughed in the video scrambled to issue public apologies, desperate to distance themselves from the fallout.
In a small coffee shop three miles from their evicted estate, Charles and Vanessa sat at a corner table. Charles was trying to pay for two coffees with a black American Express card, but the cashier handed it back with a sympathetic, yet firm look.
"Declined, sir," the cashier said. "Do you have another card?"
Charles tried another. "Declined."
A third. "Declined."
Whispers began to break out among the other patrons in the coffee shop. People were holding up their phones, looking from their screens to Charles and Vanessa, recognizing their faces from the viral news broadcasts.
"Isn't that the guy from the video?" a young man whispered loudly to his friend. "The one who sprayed the old lady?"
"Yeah, that’s him," the friend replied disgustedly. "What a piece of trash."

Vanessa pulled her coat collar up around her face, tears streaming down her cheeks as she buried her head in her hands. "Dad... please... let’s just leave. Let’s get out of here."
They walked out of the shop without their coffee, exposed to the cold morning air, with nowhere left to go.
