Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Lies

As Charles sobbed on the marble floor of the lobby, Rebecca Vance-Sterling stepped forward, opening a leather binder.

"Furthermore, Mr. Whitmore," Rebecca announced, her voice echoing clearly for the gathered reporters, "our forensic accounting team spent the night reviewing the internal books of Whitmore Holdings after taking possession of the servers."

Charles froze, his head snapping up, his eyes widening in sheer terror.

"What... what are you talking about?" he stammered.

"Over the last three years," Rebecca continued calmly, reading from the legal documents, "you systematically embezzled over fourteen million dollars from your company’s employee pension fund to maintain your lavish personal lifestyle and finance the very estate you lost today. You also committed felony wire fraud by submitting falsified revenue statements to four separate banking institutions."

The lobby erupted into gasps. Reporters furiously typed on their tablets, while news cameramen zoomed in on Charles’s pale, sweat-streaked face.

"That's a lie!" Charles shrieked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. "That's a complete fabrication!"

"The evidence, along with complete banking trails and signed internal memos, was submitted to the Federal District Attorney’s office at 7:00 AM this morning," Rebecca stated dispassionately. "Federal agents are currently executing a warrant for your arrest."

Right on cue, two federal agents in dark suits pushed through the heavy glass doors of the lobby, followed by two uniformed police officers.

"Charles Whitmore?" the lead agent asked, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs.

Charles tried to scramble to his feet to run, but his legs gave out under the sheer weight of terror, and he collapsed onto his side. The officers moved in swiftly, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking the steel cuffs around his wrists.

"Charles Whitmore, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and corporate tax evasion," the officer read him his rights as they hoisted him to his feet.

"Vanessa! Help me!" Charles screamed, his face contorted in tears as he was led toward the police cruiser waiting outside. "Call the lawyers! Vanessa!"

Vanessa stood frozen, staring at her father as he was dragged away in disgrace. The illusion of their untouchable high-society life had completely shattered, exposing the rotten core beneath it.

She turned back to look at me, her eyes red, her lips trembling. "Daniel... what about me? What am I supposed to do?"

"You are young, Vanessa," I said, looking at her without a trace of anger, only absolute indifference. "You can get a job. You can rent a small apartment. And for the first time in your life, you can learn what it feels like to earn your own keep."

I turned my back on her, extending my arm to my mother.

"Come on, Mom," I said softly. "Let's go home."
