Chapter 10 - The Family

Two years later.
The summer afternoon sun glittered off the deep blue waters of Narragansett Bay as gentle waves lapped against the stone seawall of the renovated Petrov estate.
On the manicured back lawn overlooking the lake, a grand white pavilion tent had been set up, decorated with fresh white lilies and lavender. Fifty close friends, business associates, and family members sat in elegant wooden chairs facing an altar framed by old oak trees.
At the front of the altar stood Alexei Petrov, looking striking in a bespoke black tuxedo. Beside him stood Dmitri, serving as his best man, looking unusually sharp and completely free of his usual grim security posture.
The string quartet playing softly near the water transitioned into a quiet, beautiful processional hymn.
Walking down the aisle, holding a basket of pink rose petals, was six-year-old Sophie. She wore a lovely cream-colored lace dress with a tiny silver stethoscope pendant hanging around her neck—a real silver piece custom-crafted by a master jeweler in Paris.
She tossed petals with great flair, smiling at the guests, completely at home in the grand setting.
Behind her walked Maria.
She looked breathtaking in a floor-length emerald silk gown that highlighted her warm eyes and radiant smile. She walked with a grace and confidence that belonged to a woman who knew exactly who she was, where she belonged, and who stood beside her.
Alexei watched her approach, his chest rising and falling with quiet emotion.
When Maria reached the altar, Alexei took her hand in his, his calloused fingers wrapping around hers with absolute gentleness.
The minister stepped forward, speaking words of love, resilience, and the unexpected journeys that bring souls together.
When it came time for the exchange of vows, Alexei didn't look at a written paper. He looked directly into Maria’s eyes.
"Three years ago, Maria," Alexei said, his deep baritone carrying clearly over the sound of the lake breeze, "I thought my life was defined by the walls I built, the empire I controlled, and the enemies I fought. I believed strength meant standing alone in the dark."
He glanced down at Sophie, who was standing beside her mother, watching them with bright, intelligent eyes.
"Then a little girl walked into my study with a dollar-store toy and showed me that true bravery isn't holding a weapon," Alexei whispered, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "It's having the heart to see someone suffering and refusing to leave them behind. You and Sophie didn't just save my life, Maria. You gave me a life worth living."
Maria blinked back tears, her voice soft and trembling with pure love as she spoke her vows.
"Alexei, you spent your life protecting a world that never truly cared for you," Maria said. "You gave us safety when we had nowhere to turn. But today, I give you my heart, my loyalty, and my home. You will never have to fight alone again."
"By the power vested in me," the minister announced with a radiant smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife."
The guests erupted into warm, joyful applause.
Alexei pulled Maria into a deep, loving kiss under the golden afternoon sky.
When they parted, Sophie immediately squeezed herself between them, tugging on Alexei’s tuxedo jacket.
"Mr. Alexei! Mrs. Mommy!" Sophie piped up loudly over the applause.
Alexei laughed—a genuine, deep, booming sound that echoed across the lake—and bent down, lifting six-year-old Sophie into his arms while keeping his other arm tightly around Maria’s waist.
"What is it, Dr. Sophie?" Alexei asked, smiling down at his daughter.
Sophie pulled her silver stethoscope from her dress, pressed it against Alexei’s chest, and then leaned over to press it against Maria’s chest.
She listened carefully for three seconds, then looked up at the crowd with a triumphant grin.

"Both hearts are beating together!" Dr. Sophie announced happily. "The family is completely fixed!"
And under the bright summer sun, surrounded by the quiet security of real love, the powerful man, the resilient mother, and the tiny doctor walked together down the aisle into their new life.
