Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Syndicate

The fallout in the Grand Ballroom was swift, absolute, and merciless.
Federal agents moved in synchronized precision, slapping steel handcuffs onto Senator Thomas Blake right at the podium, surrounded by flashing press cameras that had been tipped off by Dmitri thirty minutes prior.
Two more agents approached the VIP table, hauling Viktor Sokolov and Antonio Moretti out of their chairs.
"This is a mistake!" Moretti screamed hysterically as he was dragged away, his eyes wild with terror. "I didn't put anything in the coffee! It was Sokolov! Sokolov paid the chef!"
"Shut up, you fool!" Sokolov roared back, struggling against the federal agents holding his arms behind his back.
Alexei stood calmly in the middle of the room, holding Sophie securely, watching his enemies unravel before his eyes.
Agent Vance walked over to Alexei, stepping past the shattered champagne glass. He looked at Alexei, then down at the tiny girl with dark curls holding a plastic stethoscope.
"We swept Sokolov’s private estate in Barrington an hour ago, Petrov," Agent Vance reported quietly, keeping his voice below the noise of the media frenzy behind them. "We found the secondary stash of military choking capsules in his safe, along with the wire transfer receipts to Chef Julian and Antonio Moretti."
"And the Senator?" Alexei asked softly.
"Blake’s personal secretary sang like a canary twenty minutes ago," Vance replied with a faint, grim smile. "He gave us the recorded phone calls between Blake and Sokolov planning the hostile takeover of your lakefront assets. They're all going away for twenty years minimum."
Vance looked at Sophie, his stern federal demeanor softening for a split second.
"So this is the doctor who broke the case?" Vance asked.
Sophie looked at the FBI badge hanging from Vance’s neck. She leaned down from Alexei’s hip, pressed her pink stethoscope disc against Vance’s chest, and nodded.
"Your heart goes bump-bump-bump," Sophie informed the federal agent. "You are healthy. You can have a lollipop."
Agent Vance let out a genuine chuckle. "Thank you, doctor. I'll remember that."
Vance turned back to Alexei, his expression becoming serious once more. "You're clean on this one, Petrov. The grand jury is dropping the preliminary inquiry into your logistics division. But keep your perimeter secure. Sokolov has allies in Detroit who won't be happy about this."
"Let them come," Alexei said flatly. "They know where to find me."
As the federal agents escorted the prisoners out through the side exits, the remaining high-society guests in the ballroom looked at Alexei with a brand-new sense of quiet, terrifying awe.
He hadn't just survived an assassination attempt; he had publicly dismantled a corrupt state senator, a rival syndicate boss, and a millionaire contractor in under ten minutes, all while holding a toddler in purple leggings.
Maria stepped up beside Alexei, tears of overwhelming relief streaming down her cheeks.
"It's over?" Maria whispered, barely daring to believe it. "It's really over?"
Alexei turned to her, his dark eyes warm and steady.
"For them, it is over," Alexei said gently. "For you and Sophie, it is just beginning."

He gestured toward the private rear exit where his black Mercedes was waiting under heavy guard.
"Come, Maria," Alexei said, holding out a hand to escort her. "Let's go home."
