Chapter 7 - The Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, tuxedo-clad donors, high-society matriarchs, and political operatives.
At the main podium, standing beneath two massive American flags, was Senator Thomas Blake—a silver-haired politician with a million-dollar smile and an immaculate navy suit.
Sitting at the head VIP table directly in front of the stage were Viktor Sokolov—a heavy-set, scarred man in his late fifties wearing a dark pinstripe suit—and Antonio Moretti, a sharp-featured man with nervous eyes who kept checking his encrypted phone every thirty seconds.
Senator Blake leaned toward the microphone, his voice echoing through the ballroom speakers.
"...and as we look toward the economic future of our great waterfront," Blake announced smoothly, waving a hand toward the audience, "we must ensure that our logistics and development contracts are held by men of honor, men of stability—not by shadowy corporate entities plagued by sudden... leadership vacuums."
At the VIP table, Viktor Sokolov raised his champagne glass in a silent, arrogant toast toward Moretti. Moretti offered a tight, nervous smile in return, tapping his phone screen.
"Where is the confirmation?" Moretti whispered across the table to Sokolov. "The team in Lake Forest hasn't checked in."
"Relax, Antonio," Sokolov sneered under his breath. "The poison worked. The breach team was just clean-up. By six o'clock today, the news will announce Petrov suffered a massive coronary event. The board will panic, and we step in."
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom swung open with a booming thud that echoed off the high gilded ceiling.
The ambient chatter of two hundred guests died down instantly.
Standing in the threshold, framed by the bright lights of the grand hallway behind him, was Alexei Petrov.
He was carrying a four-year-old girl in purple leggings on his hip. Walking beside him was Maria Alvarez, dressed elegantly in green, escorted by two massive security guards.
Senator Blake’s speech stopped dead in his throat. His mouth remained slightly open, his hands freezing on the edges of the podium.
At the front table, Antonio Moretti dropped his crystal champagne glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, sending sparkling wine splashing across his leather shoes.
Viktor Sokolov’s face drained of every drop of color, turning a ghostly, sickly grey.
Alexei didn't rush. He walked down the center aisle of the ballroom with slow, deliberate, absolute authority. The crowd parted before him like the Red Sea, hushed whispers cascading through the room.
"Is that Petrov?"
"I thought he was ill!"
"Who is the child?"
Alexei stopped directly in front of the head VIP table, ten feet away from Sokolov and Moretti.
Sophie looked around at the glittering chandeliers, then down at the shattered champagne glass near Moretti’s foot.
"That's messy," Sophie pointed out loudly, her tiny voice carrying clearly through the silent room. "You need a broom."
A few laughter ripples broke out among the guests in the back rows.
Alexei looked down at Antonio Moretti, his dark eyes burning with a lethal, quiet intensity.
"Good afternoon, Antonio," Alexei rasped softly, his voice amplified by the quiet room. "I believe you know Maria Alvarez. My executive housekeeper."
Moretti swallowed hard, his hands shaking so violently he had to hide them beneath the tablecloth. "Alexei... I... what is the meaning of this?"
"I came to return something you dropped," Alexei said calmly.
He reached into his suit pocket, pulled out a clear plastic bag containing the blueprint seal stamped with Moretti's firm name, and tossed it onto the center of the table.
Beside Moretti, Viktor Sokolov slowly pushed his chair back, his hand reaching subtly toward the inside of his jacket.
Before Sokolov’s hand could reach his lapel, Dmitri stepped forward from behind Alexei, drawing his heavy pistol and resting the barrel directly against the back of Sokolov’s neck.
The crowd in the ballroom gasped in horror. Several women screamed.
"Keep your hands on the table, Viktor," Dmitri commanded softly.
"Petrov, are you insane?" Senator Blake shouted from the stage, his voice cracking with panic into the microphone. "This is a private political event! Call security! Someone call the police!"
Alexei turned his gaze toward the stage, looking up at the terrified politician.
"The police are already here, Senator," Alexei said smoothly.
On cue, the side doors of the ballroom swung open, and eight federal agents dressed in dark suits with FBI windbreakers marched into the room, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance of the Chicago Field Office.

Agent Vance walked straight up to the stage, pulled a folded warrant from his jacket, and handed it to Senator Thomas Blake.
"Thomas Blake," Vance announced loudly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and racketeering."
