Chapter 4 - The Breach

The darkness in the underground bunker was absolute, thick, and suffocating.

Maria let out a sharp cry, dropping to her knees on the concrete floor, clutching Sophie against her chest with every ounce of strength she possessed.

"Sophie! Stay quiet!" Maria whispered hysterically into her daughter’s ear.

"Mommy, it's dark," Sophie whimpered, her tiny hands clutching her mother’s shirt. "Where did the doctor light go?"

A second later, heavy emergency red backup lights hummed to life along the baseboards, casting long, eerie shadows across the concrete walls.

"Dmitri, take team two and flank the generator hut," Alexei’s cold, steady voice echoed through the dim room. He stood in the center of the bunker, his handgun held low at his side, completely unbothered by the sudden plunge into darkness. "Don't let them reach the fuel tanks."

"What about you?" Dmitri asked, pulling a second magazine from his belt.

"I stay here," Alexei rasped. "With our witnesses."

Dmitri nodded once, signaled to three heavily armed guards standing near the concrete stairs, and vanished up the staircase, the heavy steel door slamming shut behind them.

Inside the subterranean bunker, only Alexei, Maria, Sophie, and two guards remained.

The sound of muffled gunfire echoed from high above—heavy, rapid bursts of suppressed automatic weapons rattling through the concrete floorboards.

Maria was weeping silently, her body shaking as she cowered near the back door. "They're going to kill us. Oh God, they're going to kill us..."

Alexei walked over to them smoothly. He didn't look scared; he looked like a predator executing a long-planned strategy. He knelt down beside Maria, his massive shadow blocking out the red emergency light.

"Look at me, Maria," Alexei commanded, his raspy voice firm and steady.

Maria looked up, her eyes wide with terror.

"No one is entering this room," Alexei promised her. "This bunker is reinforced with three inches of solid ballistic steel. The door behind me can withstand an anti-tank missile. You are safer down here than anywhere else in North America."

He turned his gaze to Sophie, who was peeking out from behind her mother’s arm.

Sophie looked at the black gun in Alexei’s hand, then up at his bruised neck.

"Is that a toy?" Sophie asked softly.

"No," Alexei replied truthfully. "It's a tool I use to keep bad people away."

"It's loud," Sophie said, scrunching up her nose. "I don't like loud tools."

Alexei stared at her for a moment, then quietly engaged the safety catch on the weapon and tucked it into his waistband, hiding it beneath his shirt.

"Then I will not use it unless I must," Alexei said gently.

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic screech reverberated through the concrete ceiling.

The security monitors on the wall flickered back to life, powered by the bunker’s independent auxiliary battery system. Camera feed two—the service corridor directly above them—showed a flash of light.

A door was blown off its hinges.

"They breached the upper service entrance," one of the remaining guards warned, raising his rifle toward the heavy steel door at the top of the concrete stairs. "Sir, they're inside the main house."

Alexei stood up slowly. His eyes narrowed as he watched the monitor screen.

Two men dressed in black tactical gear with unmarked black helmets stepped through the ruined doorway above. But they weren't searching the house for money or documents. They were moving with precise military discipline, heading straight toward the hidden panel that opened the basement door.

"They have the layout," Alexei muttered, his tone dropping into a terrifying register. "They know about the subterranean entrance. The leak didn't come from the kitchen. It came from someone who helped build this estate."

"Sir, they're setting a breaching charge on the upper stair door!" the guard called out.

"Let them," Alexei said coldly.

He reached over to the main control panel, opened a small clear cover, and flipped a toggle switch marked GRID 4.

Deep in the stairwell above, a series of heavy mechanical locks engaged automatically, dropping two steel blast shutters between the upper door and the lower landing, trapping the two intruders in a six-foot concrete kill zone.

Before the intruders could react, high-pressure tear gas flooded the enclosed stairwell through hidden vents.

On the monitor, the two men immediately dropped their weapons, clutching their throats, slamming their hands against the reinforced steel shutters in sheer panic.

"Dmitri," Alexei spoke into his lapel radio. "We have two alive in the eastern stairwell. Secure them."

"Copy that, boss," Dmitri’s voice crackled through the radio speaker over the sound of dying gunfire above. "Perimeter is clear. Three attackers neutralized outside. The generator hut is secure."

The heavy silence returned to the bunker, broken only by the hum of the backup generators.

Maria let out a long, shuddering gasp, collapsing against the wall in overwhelming relief.

Sophie looked up at the monitors, then at Alexei.

"Did you catch the bad doctor?" Sophie asked.

May you like

Alexei walked back over to her, reaching down with one hand to gently pat her head.

"We caught his helpers, small one," Alexei whispered, his raspy voice full of a dark, quiet authority. "Tomorrow, we catch the doctor."
