Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

The summer sun was setting low over the Atlantic Ocean, casting deep shades of orange, purple, and gold across the quiet beach behind the Sterling family estate in the Hamptons.
The gentle crash of waves echoed rhythmically against the shore, bringing a cool, salty breeze that rustled the tall grass along the sand dunes.
Eighty feet away from the water, a simple wooden bonfire crackled softly in a pit dug into the sand.
Eight-year-old Sophia ran along the water's edge, her bare feet splashing through the shallow foam as she chased a frisbee thrown by her father. Her laughter was light, free, and completely unburdened by the dark memories of the past.
Alexander caught the frisbee on its return trajectory, laughing as he tumbled onto the soft sand. Sophia threw herself onto his chest, giggled hysterically, and piled a handful of dry sand over his shoes.
A few yards away, sitting on a wooden bench wrapped in a light summer blanket, Lauren watched them with a serene, peaceful smile. She held a warm cup of cider in her hands, her face lit by the soft amber glow of the setting sun.
Alexander stood up, brushed the sand from his linen trousers, and took his daughter by the hand, walking over to join Lauren at the bench.
He sat down beside his wife, wrapping one arm around her shoulders and pulling her tightly against his side. Sophia curled up on the blanket between them, resting her head against Alexander’s chest, her breathing slowing as exhaustion from a long day of playing at the beach finally took over.
"She fell asleep," Lauren whispered softly, kissing the top of Sophia’s head.
"She’s safe," Alexander murmured, looking out over the vast, calm horizon of the sea.
In his pocket, his phone buzzed once—a quiet notification from Arthur Pendelton regarding the quarterly report for the Sterling Housing Foundation. The organization had just provided permanent housing for its five-hundredth family.
Alexander didn't pull the phone out. He didn't check the screen.
He reached down, taking Lauren’s hand in his, feeling the warmth of her skin, the strength of her grip, and the steady, unbroken beat of their shared life.

The dark shadows of three lost years had finally dissolved into the light. The lies had been shattered, the stolen wealth restored, and the broken pieces of their family bound together into something far stronger than it had ever been before.
As the last rays of sunlight vanished below the dark rim of the ocean, leaving a canopy of brilliant, clear stars across the night sky, Alexander closed his eyes, took a deep breath of the ocean air, and held his wife and daughter close against his heart.
