Chapter 5 - The Glass House

By two o'clock in the morning, the master penthouse on the top floor of the Sterling Tower on Fifth Avenue was brilliantly illuminated.
The penthouse had been preserved exactly as it was three years ago. The custom Italian leather sofas, the abstract oil paintings Lauren had chosen for the living room, and the grand piano near the balcony were untouched, dusted daily by a loyal house staff who had worked for Alexander for a decade.
Lauren sat on the edge of the master bed wearing a warm cashmere robe, her hair wet from a hot shower. A team of two private doctors, brought in by Arthur Pendelton, were completing a comprehensive medical evaluation of both Lauren and Sophia in the adjoining rooms.
Sophia was tucked into the center of the king-sized bed, fast asleep, holding a large stuffed bear that Alexander’s head housekeeper had retrieved from the guest nursery. Her small face was clean, her hair combed, and her skin looked warm under the soft golden light of the bedside lamp.
Alexander walked into the bedroom carrying two mugs of tea. He handed one to Lauren, then sat down on the mattress beside her, taking her small, rough hand in his.
Dr. Aris, a top physician from Mount Sinai, stepped out of the bathroom and closed the door quietly.
"How are they, Doctor?" Alexander asked immediately.
Dr. Aris sighed, setting his tablet on the nightstand. "Mrs. Sterling is suffering from acute nutritional deficiency, mild anemia, and chronic physical exhaustion. With proper rest, a structured diet, and medical supervision, she will make a full recovery within a few months."
He looked toward the bed where Sophia lay.
"The child has moderate vitamin deficiencies and early signs of bone density suppression due to lack of adequate calcium over the past two years," Dr. Aris continued grimly. "It is unbelievable that a child living in New York City in this day and age could suffer from these conditions. Another six months of that diet, and she could have suffered permanent developmental damage."
Alexander’s hand closed so tightly around his tea mug that the ceramic groaned under the pressure. "Thank you, Doctor. Ensure the private nursing staff remains on duty twenty-four hours a day until further notice."
"Of course, Mr. Sterling," the doctor bowed slightly and exited the room, closing the heavy oak doors behind him.
Lauren looked down at her hands, tears silently dripping onto the sleeve of her cashmere robe. "I tried, Alexander... I worked three jobs. I cleaned offices at night, I packed bread in the morning... but every time I saved a few hundred dollars, the landlord raised the rent, or the power was cut off, or someone stole my purse on the subway."
"It wasn't bad luck, Lauren," Alexander said softly, raising her chin with his finger so she had to look him in the eye. "Victoria was paying an agency to sabotage you. Every time you got ahead, her security team made sure you were pushed back down."
Lauren’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "Why? Why would she do that to her own granddaughter?"
"Because as long as you were poor, desperate, and terrified, you would never have the resources or the courage to hire a lawyer and contact me," Alexander explained, his voice cold and analytical. "She kept you in survival mode so the truth would stay buried forever."
The bedroom phone on the nightstand buzzed silently, its light flashing red.
Alexander picked it up. "Speak, Arthur."
"Victoria is downstairs in the building lobby," Arthur’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent. "She bypassed security using her master elevator keycard. She’s coming up to the penthouse right now."
Lauren gasped, instinctively reaching over to wrap her arms around sleeping Sophia. "Alexander... don't let her near her!"
Alexander stood up slowly. He smoothed his shirt, adjusted his watch, and looked down at his wife with a calm, terrifying confidence.

"She isn't coming here to hurt anyone, Lauren," Alexander said softly. "She’s coming here to beg."
He turned and walked out of the master suite, shutting the double doors behind him to protect his family's peace.
