Chapter 3 - The Cold Ledger

The private office on the forty-fifth floor of the Sterling Real Estate Tower was dimly lit. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline, but inside, the only light came from the green glow of three computer monitors sitting on Alexander's desk.
Sophia lay fast asleep on the plush velvet sofa in the corner, wrapped in a soft cashmere throw blanket. A tray containing fresh soup, warm bread, and hot chocolate sat on the low glass table beside her, half-eaten.
Alexander stood behind his desk, his arms crossed over his chest, watching Arthur Pendelton type rapidly on a encrypted terminal.
"I've bypassed the primary estate proxy," Arthur said, his fingers flying across the keys. "Because the trust was set up under false pretenses of child support, we were able to obtain an emergency forensic audit warrant signed by Judge Vance at twenty minutes past eight."
A series of bank ledger sheets began to populate the central screen in long columns of red and black numbers.
Alexander leaned in, his eyes scanning the transaction histories.
Account 4092: Sterling Heritage Trust.
Monthly Deposit: $5,000.00 (Origin: Alexander Sterling Personal)
Immediate Transfer: $5,000.00 -> Account 8812 (V. Sterling Private Shell LLC)
"Every single transfer," Arthur whispered, shaking his head in disbelief. "Within six hours of your wire clearing, the funds were swept into an offshore holding entity registered in the Cayman Islands under Victoria’s maiden name."
"Where did the money go from there?" Alexander asked, his voice icy and flat.
Arthur clicked a secondary file. A list of credit card statements and property deeds appeared.
"Country club dues in Palm Beach. Private jet charter retainers. An art procurement account in London. And..." Arthur paused, turning his head to look at Alexander with deep sympathy. "And an ongoing payment to a private security firm called Apex Protections."
Alexander’s eyes narrowed. "Apex? Why was she paying a security firm?"
"I ran the invoicing numbers," Arthur said, pulling up a secondary document. "Victoria wasn't just stealing the money, Alexander. She was paying Apex twelve hundred dollars a month for 'surveillance and containment management' at an address in the East Bronx."
Alexander took two steps toward the monitor, his knuckles cracking as his hands balled into fists. "Containment?"
"They were monitoring Lauren," Arthur said softly. "Whenever Lauren tried to apply for a legitimate job in the city, an anonymous call was made to the employer’s HR department claiming she was under federal investigation for financial embezzlement at Sterling Corporation. She was blacklisted from every major commercial lease, every corporate job, and every licensed daycare center in the tri-state area."
Alexander closed his eyes. The breath came out of his nose in slow, hot bursts.
He remembered the day Lauren left. He remembered coming home to find her closets empty, her wedding ring sitting on the marble vanity, and a cold printed note claiming she couldn't handle the pressure of the Sterling family name any longer. He remembered his mother taking his hands, weeping softly, telling him that Lauren had taken three million dollars from the corporate charity account before running off.
It had all been an engineered nightmare.
Victoria had forged the embezzlement charges, forced Lauren out under threat of federal prison, used her vast influence to ensure Lauren could never earn a living wage, and kept her trapped in absolute poverty—all while stealing the child support money Alexander sent every month to maintain her own lavish lifestyle.
"She kept them in a cage," Alexander whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of grief and fury. "She broke my wife... and she starved my child."
A soft sound came from the sofa.
Sophia shifted under the cashmere blanket, her small hand reaching out in her sleep as if searching for something. "Mommy..." she murmured softly in her dream. "Don't cry, Mommy... I got the rolls..."
Alexander walked across the room, kneeling beside the sofa. He reached out and gently smoothed a strand of dark hair away from Sophia's forehead.
"Arthur," Alexander said without looking back.
"Yes, Alexander?"
"Call the chief of police. Tell him I am filing formal criminal charges against Victoria Sterling for grand larceny, wire fraud, child endangerment, and extortion."
Arthur hesitated for a fraction of a second. "Alexander... she is seventy years old. If she is convicted on these charges, she will spend the rest of her life in a federal penitentiary."
Alexander turned his head, looking at his lawyer with cold, dead eyes.
"Then she had better hope the food there is better than what my daughter found in the trash tonight."
He stood up, grabbing his leather jacket from the chair.
May you like
"Where are you going?" Arthur asked.
"To 138th Street," Alexander said, picking up his sleeping daughter in his arms. "I'm bringing my wife home."
