Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction

Six months later, a gentle spring breeze swept through the lush green trees of Central Park.
In a quiet, private courtyard behind a restored brownstone on East 74th Street, sunlight streamed down onto a slate patio. A small wooden table was set with fresh strawberries, warm pastries, and a pitcher of freshly squeezed orange juice.
Seven-year-old Sophia sat on a wooden bench, wearing a bright yellow sundress and clean white sneakers. Her hair was braided neatly, her skin healthy and glowing, her cheeks full and pink. She was laughing joyfully as she drew pictures of horses in a large sketchbook using a set of brand-new watercolor pens.
Beside her, Lauren sat holding a cup of herbal tea. She had gained back her healthy weight, her skin smooth and vibrant once again. She wore a simple, elegant cream sweater, her eyes soft and peaceful as she watched her daughter draw.
The back glass door opened, and Alexander stepped out onto the patio. He had dropped his suit jacket onto a chair inside, wearing only his white dress shirt with the collar unbuttoned.
He walked over to the table, leaning down to kiss the top of Lauren’s head before placing his hands gently on Sophia’s shoulders.
"How is the masterpiece coming along, sweetie?" Alexander asked, looking down at the sketchbook.
Sophia held up her drawing proudly. "It's our new house, Daddy! Look, I drew a big garden in the back so Mommy can grow tomatoes!"
"It's beautiful," Alexander smiled warmly, kissing her cheek. "The most beautiful house in New York."
Arthur Pendelton walked down the side path of the courtyard, carrying a thin leather briefcase. He offered a polite nod to Lauren and Sophia before stepping over to the edge of the patio with Alexander.
"Is it finished?" Alexander asked softly, stepping a few feet away from the table.
"The plea agreement was signed an hour ago by the Federal Magistrate," Arthur reported, pulling a legal document from his briefcase. "Victoria pleaded guilty to all counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and tax evasion. Because of her age and declining health, the judge sentenced her to twelve years at the Federal Medical Center in Danbury, Connecticut."
Alexander looked down at the grass, his expression quiet and reflective. "Did she ask to see me?"
"Yes," Arthur said gently. "She asked if you would visit her before her transport tomorrow morning."

Alexander looked back at his wife and daughter. Sophia was showing Lauren her drawing, both of them bursting into clear, happy laughter that filled the sunny courtyard.
"Tell her no," Alexander said softly. "I have a family to take care of."
