Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of Treason

Camille stared at her husband, her mind clearly racing to find a way out. The cold, calculated composure she had displayed moments earlier shattered, replaced by a desperate, rapid calculation.

"Declan... listen to me," she began, taking a half-step forward, her hands raised placatingly. "It’s not what you think—"

"Stop," Declan commanded, his thumb sliding back the hammer of the pistol. The sharp, mechanical click cut through the room like a blade. "Do not take another step. Do not speak to me as if I am the fool who held your hand while you pretended to be brain-dead."

"Declan, please!" Dr. Aris squeaked, his knees shaking beneath his tailored trousers. "She forced me! She had dirt on my medical license! She threatened my family!"

"Shut up, Aris," Declan growled without shifting his gaze.

"How did you get out of Georgetown?" Camille asked, her voice dropping into a hardened, flat tone as she realized tears and pleading would not work on the man she had married. "Victor had eight men in that warehouse."

"Victor is dead," Declan replied simply. "His men are dead. The sit-down fell apart before the coffee was poured. I walked out early because I was tired, Camille. I was tired of blood. I was tired of killing people to avenge you."

He let out a short, hollow laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping over stone. "Do you have any idea how many men I put in the ground for you? The families I destroyed? The blood on my hands because I thought someone took my wife away from me?"

"You built an empire on blood, Declan!" Camille suddenly snapped, her posture straightening, her eyes flashing with a sudden, venomous rage. "Did you think I wanted to spend the rest of my life as the mobster’s dutiful little wife? Living in a gilded cage on Mercer Island while you ran the docks?"

"You could have left," Declan said quietly. "I would have given you half of everything and let you walk."

"You never let anything go!" she spat back. "You’re Declan Walsh! You control everything! If I asked for a divorce, you would have investigated me. You would have found out about the offshore accounts I was building. You would have destroyed me!"

"So you bombed your own car?" Declan asked, the sheer insanity of it finally hitting him. "You detonated C4 while sitting in the driver's seat?"

"Aris rigged the charges under the passenger floorboards," Camille explained, her voice chillingly detached, as if she were describing a business transaction. "It was low-yield. Designed to throw the car, not destroy it. I knew how to take the impact. A few broken ribs, a superficial head injury... and then Aris took over the medical care."

She gestured around the luxurious master suite. "It was perfect. A specialized team, high-tech monitoring equipment that I controlled, heavy sedation whenever you were near, and complete access to your financial network while you were out playing the grieving avenger."

"You used my grief as a smokescreen," Declan said, the painful realization settling deep into his soul.

"It worked for two years," Camille said, taking a subtle step toward the nightstand where a secondary security panic button was installed. "Until you came home three hours early."

"Don't do it, Camille," Declan warned, noticing her movement instantly.

"What are you going to do, Declan?" she asked, her voice turning soft, almost taunting. "Are you going to shoot your wife? The woman you loved more than life itself? Look at me. I'm the ghost you've been chasing."

Before Declan could answer, a sudden, heavy crash echoed from the main foyer downstairs.
