Chapter 8 - Floor 34

At 3:45 AM, the Coal Harbour Financial Tower stood tall and silent against the dark waters of Vancouver’s harbor.

Inside the basement utility room, Declan severed the building’s primary fiber-optic trunk line with a heavy pair of wire cutters. Instantly, every security camera, automated door lock, and external communication link on the upper floors went black.

High above, on the 34th floor, emergency red lighting kicked on, bathing the polished marble hallways of the Vanguard Group's covert headquarters in a sinister crimson glow.

In the central server room, Harrison stood before a bank of high-density data towers, his dark suit crisp, his face cold and angular. Four heavily armed mercenaries surrounded him, their submachine guns raised, scanning the darkened glass walls of the office.

"What happened to the link?" Harrison demanded, his voice carrying the sharp precision of a former military officer.

"Primary fiber line was cut from the basement, sir!" a technician reported, frantically typing on a backup terminal. "Local security protocols have initiated lockdown! The elevators are frozen!"

"It's Walsh," Harrison said, his eyes narrowing. "He survived Mercer Island."

"Sir, that's impossible," one of the mercenaries said. "The entire west wing collapsed!"

"Declan Walsh doesn't die in house fires," Harrison spat, unholstering a suppressed Sig Sauer from his hip. "Form a perimeter around the server core. If anyone approaches the glass, kill them."

Before the mercenary could respond, the heavy glass doors at the front of the suite shattered inward with a violent explosion.

A flashbang grenade went off, filling the high-tech office with blinding white light and a deafening 170-decibel roar.

The mercenaries stumbled, disoriented, screaming in pain as their night-vision optics flared out.

Declan stepped through the smoke, moving with lethal, terrifying speed.

He fired two rapid shots, taking down the first mercenary before the man could raise his weapon. He stepped to the side as a spray of wild bullets tore through the drywall, grabbed the second mercenary by his tactical vest, drove his knee into the man's ribs, and threw him over a glass desk into the server racks.

Camille entered right behind him, her Glock barking twice. The third mercenary dropped to his knees, his weapon falling from his hands as blood pooled onto the pristine white floor.

Harrison ducked behind the main server console, returning fire with ice-cold precision. A bullet tore through Declan’s sleeve, grazing his left forearm, but Declan didn't even flinch.

"Harrison!" Declan shouted over the hum of the emergency generators. "Your perimeter is gone! Your servers are isolated! Give me the master drive, and I might let you walk out of this building!"

Harrison let out a harsh, mocking laugh from behind the server rack. "You're too late, Walsh! The transfer script was executed ten minutes ago! Your fifty million is already sitting in Vanguard’s main operational fund in Zurich! You have nothing!"

"I don't care about the money, Harrison," Declan said, stepping around the side of the server bank, his gun raised. "I care about the data."

Harrison lunged out from cover, swinging his pistol toward Declan's head.

Declan caught Harrison's wrist, twisting it brutally until the weapon dropped to the floor, and slammed the mercenary commander face-first into the glowing glass panel of the primary server.

Glass shattered. Harrison groaned in agony, blood streaming down his nose, but Declan held him pinned with a forearm pressed against his throat.

"The master drive," Declan whispered into his ear. "Where is the physical override key?"

Harrison spat blood onto Declan’s suit jacket, grinning through his broken teeth. "Go to hell, mobster."

Camille walked over, holding a small silver USB drive she had pulled from the technician's terminal. "I already found it, Declan. The entire Vanguard network hierarchy... including their corrupt intelligence contacts in Washington and London."

Harrison’s grin instantly vanished. Absolute terror replaced his arrogant composure. "You... you can't broadcast that file. It will destroy three international intelligence agencies!"

"Good," Declan said.

He pressed his pistol against the side of Harrison's neck and pulled the trigger.
