Chapter 9 - The Account Settled

The silent body of Harrison slumped to the floor, joining the fallen mercenaries amidst the shattered glass and smoking server banks.
Inside the ruined office, the loud hum of the cooling fans slowly died down as the backup generators exhausted their fuel, leaving only the sound of rain beating heavily against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the dark waters of Coal Harbour.
Camille stood by the central console, holding the silver USB drive in her hand. Her hair was disheveled, her jacket stained with powder burn and blood, but her eyes were fixed on Declan with a quiet, solemn intensity.
Dr. Aris sat cowering in the corner, clutching his knees, staring at the dead bodies around him in absolute silence.
Declan walked over to the window, looking out at the distant lights of the ships idling in the bay. He pulled a fresh handkerchief from his pocket and slowly wiped the blood and gunpowder residue from his hands.
"It's done," Camille said softly, stepping up beside him. "The Vanguard servers are wiped. The data on this drive can ruin every person who tried to destroy you. We won, Declan."
Declan didn't look at her. "There is no 'we', Camille."
She paused, the silver drive feeling heavy in her palm. "What are you going to do with me?"
Declan turned slowly to face her. The rage that had burned inside him since he walked into the master suite on Mercer Island had evaporated, leaving behind only a vast, empty expanse of cold clarity.
"I spent two years dying inside because I thought I lost you," Declan said, his voice flat and quiet. "I burned down my own world to avenge a ghost. But the woman standing in front of me isn't the woman I loved. She died two years ago in that car crash."
Camille swallowed hard, her confidence finally faltering under his cold, vacant stare. "Declan... please."
"Take the fifty million," Declan said.
Camille blinked, stunned. "What?"
"Take the money in the Zurich accounts," Declan repeated, looking her dead in the eye. "Take Dr. Aris. Take a private jet to South America, or Europe, or wherever you think you can hide. But if I ever see your face again—if I ever hear your name whispered in any city I walk through—I will not hesitate. I will put a bullet in your heart without saying a word."
Tears gathered in Camille's eyes, streaming down her pale cheeks. For the first time, she realized that she hadn't just lost a war for power—she had completely erased the only man who would have laid down his life to protect her.
"Declan..." she whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry," Declan said softly, turning back toward the window. "Just be gone."

Camille stood motionless for a long moment, clutching the silver drive to her chest. Then, slowly, she took a step back, grabbed Dr. Aris by his collar, and dragged him out of the ruined server room into the dark hallway, her footsteps fading into the silence of the building.
Declan stood alone in the dark room, watching the rain wash over the glass, listening to the quiet settling of the world around him.
