Chapter 5 - The Shadow Network

The side doors of the black van slid open with a sharp screech, revealing two heavy machine-gun mounts aimed directly down the concrete ramp into the garage.
"Down!" Declan roared, throwing himself out of the security booth as a wall of heavy-caliber fire tore through the garage.
Concrete pillars exploded into clouds of flying grey dust. The windshields of the luxury cars shattered into a million sparkling diamonds. The noise inside the enclosed concrete space was deafening, a physical force that punched the air right out of Declan's lungs.
Camille and Dr. Aris scrambled behind the reinforced flank of the armored Maybach, ducking low as bullets tore through the metal around them.
"That's not Moretti!" Camille screamed over the roar of the guns, her hands over her ears. "Moretti doesn't have military-grade hardware!"
Declan crawled behind a concrete support pillar beside her, his ears ringing violently. "Then who did you sell me out to, Camille?"
Camille’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying comprehension. "The Vanguard Group..."
Declan grabbed her jacket, pulling her close. "What did you say?"
"The Vanguard Group!" she repeated, her voice shaking with genuine terror for the first time. "The offshore syndicate in Zurich! I didn't just transfer your money, Declan! To get the fifty million out without triggering federal red flags, I used Vanguard’s routing system! I gave them access to your entire intelligence network in exchange for clean identities!"
"You gave a global mercenary conglomerate the keys to my entire operation?" Declan asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You sold out every agent, every safehouse, every informant I have from Seattle to Vancouver?"
"I thought they would just take the data and let me go!" she cried out. "I didn't know they were coming to wipe the city clean!"
"They aren't here for the money, you idiot!" Declan shouted, grabbing her face and forcing her to look at the slaughter unfolding in the garage. "They're here to eliminate anyone who knows their routing codes! You brought a tiger into my house and thought it would eat only me!"
Above the sound of the heavy machine guns, a sudden, sharp explosion rocked the upper level of the mansion.
The main ceiling of the subterranean garage began to crack. Heavy concrete dust and chunks of drywall rained down as the floor of the master suite above collapsed under the weight of fires raging upstairs.
"The house is coming down!" Dr. Aris shrieked, cowering on the ground, his arms wrapped tightly around the leather duffel. "We're going to be buried alive!"
Declan looked at the heavy Maybach. It was custom-built with Level B7 armor, capable of withstanding sniper fire and small explosives.
"Get in the car," Declan ordered Camille and Aris.
"What about the machine guns at the gate?" Camille asked, wiping blood from a minor cut on her forehead.
Declan reached into his belt and pulled out a small, heavy black box—the remote detonator for the estate's emergency structural defense charges.
"I built this house to be a fortress," Declan said, his eyes burning with a dark, ruthless fire. "If I can't have it, nobody can."
He shoved Camille into the driver's seat of the Maybach and slammed the heavy door shut. He slid into the passenger seat, racked the slide of his pistol, and looked at the remote control in his hand.

"Hold on," Declan said.
He pressed the red button.
