Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three months later.

The early morning sun streamed through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of a brand-new, private penthouse suite overlooking Central Park. The air was clean, filled with the fresh scent of white lilies and coffee.

Claire Bennett sat at a sleek glass desk, reviewing a series of medical documents on an iPad. She no longer wore faded navy scrubs and cheap cardigans. She wore a beautifully tailored charcoal-grey trouser suit, her dark hair neatly pinned back, looking every bit the director of an international medical foundation.

Following the night at the docks, Adrian had systematically dismantled Luke's network, stripped Vanessa’s family of their assets, and completely restructured the Moretti organization's legitimate holdings.

More importantly, he had established the Bennett Neurological Institute—a state-of-the-art research and surgical facility in Manhattan dedicated to complex spinal injuries and pediatric cardiology.

Her brother Leo had undergone his heart procedure at the institute six weeks ago. The operation had been a complete success. He was currently down on the estate grounds in Long Island, running around the private garden with a team of top pediatric physical therapists.

The heavy oak doors of the penthouse office opened smoothly.

Adrian Moretti walked into the room.

He didn't use a wheelchair. He didn't use a walker. He walked with a sleek, silver-topped mahogany cane in his right hand, his stride long, confident, and completely steady. He wore a perfectly fitted three-piece charcoal suit, his dark eyes bright and clear, entirely free of the toxic fog that had once controlled his life.

He walked across the room, stopping beside Claire’s desk. He leaned down and placed a light, tender kiss on her cheek.

"You're late for your physical therapy session, Mr. Moretti," Claire said, looking up from her iPad with a playful smirk.

"I don't need physical therapy today, Director Bennett," Adrian replied, his voice smooth and rich. "I came to deliver a report."

"Oh? What kind of report?"

Adrian reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, placing it gently on top of her iPad.

Claire looked at the box, her heart skipping a beat. She opened it to reveal a simple, stunning emerald-cut diamond ring resting against black velvet—not a loud, ostentatious display like the one he had given Vanessa, but a piece of breathtaking, elegant perfection.

"Three months ago, a nurse grabbed my fiancée's wrist to protect me while I was lying flat on the floor," Adrian said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unyielding heat. "She risked her career, her safety, and her life to save a man the whole world thought was broken."

Claire stood up from her chair, looking at the ring, then up into his handsome, sharp face. "She was just doing her job, Adrian."

"She saved my life," Adrian corrected her gently, reaching out to take her hand. "And every day since, she has been the only reason I stand tall. I don't want a fiancée who stays for the image, Claire. I want the woman who stood between me and the dark."

Claire looked at him, feeling the warmth of his strong fingers wrapped around hers—the same hands that had once trembled in defeat, now steady, powerful, and entirely devoted to her.

"Is that an order, Boss?" she asked, a soft, beautiful smile breaking across her face.

"It's a request, Claire," Adrian whispered, sliding the ring onto her finger. "From a man who belongs to you entirely."

Claire pulled him close, wrapping her arms around his neck as he held her tight, standing strong and tall on his own two feet, bathed in the bright morning light of a new dawn.
