Chapter 4 - The Tunnels Beneath

The service hallway behind the main kitchen was narrow, lined with stainless steel counters and industrial refrigerators that hummed silently in the sudden loss of power. Dominic walked backward, his tactical flashlight mounted under his pistol barrel, sweeping the dark corners behind them.
Claire pushed Adrian’s heavy wheelchair down the concrete ramp leading toward the lower basement levels. Her arms burned with exertion, but her physical therapy training gave her the exact technique needed to maneuver the heavy frame quickly without slamming the footrests into the walls. Vanessa stumbled behind them, clutching Claire's cardigan like a terrified child, her high heels discarded somewhere in the foyer, her bare feet smearing dust across the floor.
"In here," Claire said, pushing open a heavy, fire-rated steel door marked Supply Operations.
Inside was the small hydraulic lift—a heavy steel cage surrounded by industrial chains, operated by a massive manual crank wheel mounted on the side wall.
"Dominic, get inside with Adrian," Claire commanded, pointing to the narrow platform.
"I need to stay top-side and hold the door, Nurse," Dominic growled, his face covered in sweat. "If they get down this hall before you secure the lower door, we're trapped in a box."
"If you stay top-side, you die," Adrian said, stepping out of the chair using his powerful upper body, dragging himself onto the small lift floor with practiced, brutal determination. "Get on the lift, Dominic. That's an order."
Dominic grimaced but complied, stepping onto the metal grate beside Adrian's folded wheelchair.
Claire slammed the steel mesh gate shut, grabbing the heavy iron crank wheel on the wall outside the shaft. "There's a manual mechanical release at the bottom that locks the gate from inside the bunker," she called through the mesh. "I'll lower you down, then take the service ladder right beside the shaft!"
"You're not staying up here alone," Adrian said, his eyes burning through the steel mesh.
"I have the crank!" Claire shouted over the sudden sound of heavy boots echoing down the concrete hall outside. "It only operates from the outside lever! I lower you, then I jump down the access ladder! It takes ten seconds!"
Without waiting for his answer, she slammed her body weight against the heavy iron wheel.
The chains groaned as the hydraulic gears unlocked. The platform began to sink smoothly down into the concrete shaft.
Through the mesh, Adrian watched her. His expression was a volatile mix of fury, astonishment, and something else—a deep, unyielding recognition of a woman who refused to break under pressure. "Ten seconds, Claire!" he barked as his head dipped below the floor line. "Not a second more!"
The platform disappeared into the dark shaft.
Claire grabbed the heavy steel latch and locked the top access door. She turned around just as the door to the supply room was kicked open with a thunderous bang.
A tall man in tactical gear burst through, his weapon raised. The tactical light on his rifle caught Claire standing by the iron wheel.
"Where is he?!" the man shouted, raising his weapon toward her chest.
Claire didn't answer. She reached to her right, grabbed a heavy, industrial-grade steel fire extinguisher mounted on the wall, and swung it with all the strength in her shoulders.

The heavy cylinder caught the man full in the side of his tactical helmet. The metal rang out like a bell. He stumbled sideways, his rifle discharging a short burst into the concrete ceiling.
Claire didn't watch him fall. She spun around, threw open the narrow maintenance access hatch beside the shaft, and threw herself onto the vertical steel ladder, sliding down the rungs into the pitch-black abyss below.
