Chapter 8 - The Commission of Blood

The warehouse at Pier 42 in Brooklyn smelled of salt, rusted iron, and diesel fuel.

Inside the massive, high-ceilinged industrial space, five luxury sedans were parked in a wide circle, their headlights turned inward to create a bright, harsh ring of light in the center of the concrete floor. Standing in the light were eight men—the senior captains of the Moretti family, men who controlled the city's construction unions, gambling rings, and waterfront shipping corridors.

Standing at the center of the ring was Luke Moretti. He wore an immaculate tailored navy suit, a silk tie, and a gold watch that caught the glare of the headlights. His face was a mask of practiced sorrow.

"My friends," Luke was saying, his voice echoing loudly off the metal walls. "It is a tragedy. The fire swept through the estate before security could reach the upper wing. Cousin Adrian... he was unable to escape his room due to his severe physical condition. Nurse Bennett and Vanessa Hale were also lost in the blaze."

A low murmur passed through the old capos. One of them, a heavy-set man with white hair named Frank Falcone, stepped forward, chewing on an unlit cigar. "And the toxicology rumors, Luke? Word is floating around the waterfront that Adrian was being dosed."

Luke feigned a solemn, disappointed sigh. "Adrian was mentally declining, Frank. You all saw him at the party last night. He was confused, aggressive, losing his memory. The doctor confirmed his brain was deteriorating from the crash injuries. He was simply unfit to lead. As his blood relative and second-in-command, I am stepping forward to assume full control of the Moretti operations to protect us all from federal intrusion."

"Is that right, Luke?"

A deep, powerful voice echoed from the dark shadows behind the outer ring of cars.

The eight capos turned instantly, their hands moving toward their coats.

Out of the shadows rolled a black wheelchair. Pushing the chair from behind was Claire Bennett, wearing a dark wool coat, her face pale but her chin held high. Sitting upright in the chair, dressed in a sharp black suit with an open white collar, was Adrian Moretti.

Beside him walked Dominic, holding a heavy leather briefcase.

Luke’s face went chalk-white. The artificial grief on his features instantly dissolved into absolute, paralyzing horror. "Adrian...? You're... you were in the house..."

"The house burned, Luke," Adrian said, his voice carrying an icy, terrifying weight that made every man in the room instantly freeze. "But I didn't."

Claire pushed the chair directly into the center of the ring of headlights, stopping ten feet from Luke.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Luke shouted, trying to regain his footing as he turned to the surrounding capos. "Look at him! He's a broken man being pushed around by a hired girl! He can't even govern his own household!"

"Dominic," Adrian said calmly.

Dominic stepped forward, placed the heavy leather briefcase on the hood of Frank Falcone’s sedan, and popped the steel latches open. He pulled out a thick stack of printed documents and a clear plastic bag containing the white pills, placing them directly under the bright headlights.

"These are the lab reports from the toxicology department at New York General," Dominic announced to the room. "Signed by certified bio-chemists. They show that for the past three months, Luke Moretti has been paying Dr. Grant Mercer to poison Adrian with a synthetic paralyzing agent."

A sharp, collective gasp echoed among the capos. Frank Falcone leaned down, picking up the chemical analysis papers, his eyes skimming the bank records showing Luke's shell company, Aegis Holdings, transferring millions to Dr. Mercer's offshore accounts.

"This is bullshit!" Luke screamed, reaching inside his jacket. "It's a fabrication! She's a disgraced nurse he bought off!"

CLACK.

Dominic’s gun was out instantly, aimed directly at Luke's forehead. "Touch that piece, Luke, and I'll paint this concrete with your brains before you clear the holster."

"Frank! Mario! Listen to me!" Luke pleaded, looking frantically at the old capos. "Adrian is a cripple! He can't run this city from a wheel chair! He's weak!"

Adrian looked down at his own hands resting on his armrests. Then, he looked up at Claire.

Claire met his gaze. She stepped forward, placing her hand firmly under his left elbow, giving him the exact structural leverage they had spent weeks practicing in therapy.

Adrian planted his feet flat on the concrete floor.

With a deep, guttural growl that echoed from the bottom of his chest, Adrian Moretti stood up.
