Chapter 7 - The Shadow Alliance

By 4:00 AM, the noise above the bunker had died down. Dominic had accessed the estate's hidden underground exit tunnel—a two-mile concrete passage leading beneath the property boundary to an abandoned commercial warehouse near the waterfront.
Standing in the warehouse, illuminated only by the headlights of an unmarked black armored SUV that Dominic had prepped for emergency escape, Adrian was already taking control of his syndicate.
He sat in the rear passenger seat, a encrypted satellite phone pressed to his ear. His voice was calm, measured, and ruthlessly clear as he called the five senior capos of the Moretti organization one by one.
"This is Adrian," he said into the phone. "The fire at the estate was an attempt on my life. Luke has betrayed the family. Assemble the senior council at the Brooklyn docks by 6:00 AM. Do not inform Luke."
He hung up the phone and looked out the tinted window.
Claire stood near the rear of the vehicle, wearing an oversized black coat Dominic had given her to cover her torn scrubs. She was staring at her cell phone. She had three missed calls from her aunt in Queens and a text message from Mount Sinai Hospital confirming that her brother Leo’s pre-op consultation was scheduled for 9:00 AM that morning.
Adrian lowered the SUV window. "Claire. Get in."
Claire walked over to the door. "Mr. Moretti, my shift ended two hours ago. The emergency is over. You're secure with Dominic now. I need to get to Queens to see my brother."
"Get in the car, Claire," Adrian repeated, his tone leaving no room for argument, though his eyes were surprisingly soft. "You think Luke doesn't know who you are? He knows my private nurse was in that house. By sunrise, his men will be looking for you at your apartment, at your agency, and at that hospital in Manhattan."
Claire froze, a sudden spike of cold fear striking her chest. "Leo..."
"Dominic has already dispatched two of my most trusted personal guards to your aunt’s house," Adrian said smoothly. "They are moving your brother and your aunt to a secure private clinic in upstate New York as we speak. They will be entirely safe, fully funded, and protected by men who answer only to me."
Claire stared at him, her chest heaving. "You moved my family without asking me?"
"I protected your family because you protected mine," Adrian said, pushing the door open wider. "Now get in. If you want to ensure your brother’s surgery happens without Luke Moretti interfering, you stay by my side until this is finished."
Claire looked at the dark street, then back at Adrian. She realized he was right. She had stepped across the line the moment she grabbed Vanessa’s wrist in the foyer. She was no longer just an innocent bystander; she was the chief witness to an attempted murder within the highest ranks of New York's underworld.
She climbed into the leather seat beside him and pulled the door shut.
The SUV accelerated smoothly into the pre-dawn darkness of New York City.
"What happens at the Brooklyn docks at 6:00 AM?" Claire asked, leaning her head back against the leather headrest.
"A trial," Adrian said, staring out at the Manhattan skyline glittering across the dark river. "In my world, when a leader is accused of weakness, he must prove his strength publicly. Luke believes I am a crippled man who can no longer enforce his own authority."
He turned his head to look at her. "He is about to discover how wrong he is."
"You still can't stand for more than two minutes without muscle collapse," Claire warned him clinically. "The neurotoxin is leaving your system, but your legs are weak. If you try to walk into a room full of mob bosses and fall, they will turn on you instantly."
"Then you will help me stand," Adrian said softly.
May you like
"I am a medical professional, Mr. Moretti, not your tactical prop."
"You are the only person in this city I trust," Adrian replied, his voice dropping to a low, intense rumble that echoed in the quiet cabin. "And today, Claire, you are going to help me take back my empire."
