Chapter 6 - THE CONFRONTATION

The morning sun rose over the California coast, casting brilliant light across the grand foyer of the Vale mansion. But inside, the atmosphere was as cold as a morgue.

Two guards stood near the grand staircase carrying four large, expensive leather suitcases.

Vivian stood near the main entrance, dressed in a sleek beige trench coat and dark sunglasses. She was pacing furiously, her heels clicking loudly against the polished marble floor.

"This is an outrage!" she screamed at Marco, who stood near the doors with his arms crossed, impassive as a brick wall. "I am the daughter of Arthur Ashford! You cannot hold me here! I demand to see Adrian!"

"He is coming down now, Ms. Ashford," Marco said smoothly.

The heavy elevator doors near the library opened with a soft chime. Adrian rolled out into the foyer. But he was not alone.

Walking beside his wheelchair, dressed in a stunning, simple navy blue silk dress that highlighted her dark hair and porcelain skin, was Clara. She carried no tray, no cleaning rags, and no apron. She walked with her head held high, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the boss.

Vivian froze, staring in absolute disbelief at the maid standing beside her fiancé.

"What is this?" Vivian demanded, her voice shrill. "Why is the cleaning girl wearing real clothes? Adrian, have you lost your mind entirely?"

Adrian stopped his chair ten feet from Vivian. His face was carved from granite.

"Your father called me twenty minutes ago, Vivian," Adrian said, his voice echoing in the vast foyer. "He was very apologetic. It seems Marcus left a clear paper trail showing that he sold our port information to the Morettis using a bank account registered in your mother’s maiden name."

Vivian’s face drained of color. "What? No! That's... that's a lie! Marcus must have framed my mother!"

"You knew about it, Vivian," Adrian said coldly. "Marcus promised you twenty percent of the Moretti deal if you helped him keep me distracted while he dismantled my territory. You knew he was going to move against me. That's why you were so eager to leave the house yesterday."

"Adrian, baby, no!" Vivian rushed forward, dropping her designer handbag, her hands reaching out in desperation. "I loved you! I was trying to protect us! You were broken, Adrian! You couldn't run the family anymore, and the Morettis were going to kill us both if we didn't adapt!"

"Don't touch me," Adrian commanded, his tone so sharp that Vivian stopped dead in her tracks, trembling.

"You said I was a useless paralyzed boss," Adrian recalled, his voice dropping to a low, lethal hum. "You said I couldn't expect you to waste your life taking care of someone who might never recover. Well, Vivian... your burden is officially lifted."

He pointed toward the wide front doors.

"Get out of my house," Adrian said. "If you or your father ever step foot in Northern California again, Marco will ensure you are reunited with Marcus in the basement."

Vivian looked at Adrian, seeing the total absence of mercy in his eyes. She looked at Marco, who shifted his weight menacingly. Finally, her eyes landed on Clara, who stood beside Adrian’s chair, serene, dignified, and holding Adrian’s hand in open, undisputed unity.

"You're replacing me with a maid?" Vivian spat, her voice dripping with pure venom and bitterness. "A penniless little servant?"

"She is ten times the woman you will ever be," Adrian said quietly. "At least she had the courage to see a man where you only saw a wheelchair. Leave."

Sobbing with a mixture of rage and public humiliation, Vivian snatched her purse off the floor, turned, and ran out the front doors. The two guards followed her, carrying her luggage, shutting the heavy iron doors behind them with a definitive slam.

The grand foyer fell quiet.

Adrian took a deep breath, feeling a massive weight lifting off his chest for the first time in nearly a year. He turned his chair slightly to look up at Clara.

"Are you okay?" he asked gently.

Clara offered a faint, brilliant smile, her fingers tightening in his. "I have never been better, Mr. Vale."

"Adrian," he corrected softly, his eyes searching hers. "When we're alone, it's Adrian."

"Adrian," she repeated, the sound of his name on her lips making his heart beat faster than any threat from his enemies ever could.

Marco cleared his throat, stepping forward with a leather folder in hand. "Boss, we have a bigger problem now. Marcus confessed during his interrogation. The Morettis know Vivian is gone, and they know the poisoning failed. They're mobilizing three cars from San Jose right now. They're coming to finish this by force."

May you like

Adrian didn't flinch. He looked at Clara, then back at his head of security, his jaw set in steel.

"Let them come," Adrian said. "It's time to remind this city who owns the night."
