Chapter 9 - THE NEW REIGN

Three weeks later.
The California sun rose warm and brilliant over the Vale estate, bathing the freshly repaired marble pillars and iron gates in bright gold. The scars of the siege had been erased; the glass was replaced, the walls repainted, and the grounds restored to pristine beauty.
In the grand courtyard, forty men stood in disciplined, silent rows.
These were the capos, the soldiers, the port managers, and the allies of the newly consolidated Vale syndicate. The Moretti family had collapsed completely following Dominic’s death, their territories absorbed into the Vale empire without further bloodshed.
The grand double doors of the mansion swung open.
Out stepped Adrian Vale.
He was not in a wheelchair.
He walked slowly, relying on a sleek, silver-topped mahogany cane in his right hand, but his posture was straight, his chin raised, his movement powerful and undeniable.
Beside him, her hand resting gently on his left arm, walked Clara. She wore an elegant burgundy dress, her hair styled gracefully, glowing with a quiet, regal beauty that commanded absolute respect.
A low, reverent murmur ran through the assembled capos.
Adrian stopped at the top of the marble steps overlooking the courtyard. He looked out over the men who had once doubted him, who had thought him weak, finished, and broken.
"Three weeks ago," Adrian spoke, his deep voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard, "our enemies believed this family was dead. They believed that because my legs were damaged, my mind and my will were gone."
He paused, resting his cane firmly against the stone.
"They learned the truth," Adrian continued, his sharp eyes sweeping over the crowd. "And today, the Vale family stands stronger, larger, and more powerful than at any time in its history."
He turned slightly, looking down at Clara, his cold eyes softening into pure, radiant warmth.
"And I stand here today," he said, taking Clara’s hand and stepping forward, "because of this woman. She saw my strength when everyone else saw a burden. She saved my life when my own people betrayed me."
Adrian turned to face Clara directly on the sunny steps.
The crowd of hardened mobsters watched in stunned silence as Adrian Vale—the feared, unyielding mob boss—slowly lowered himself down onto one knee before her.
Clara gasped, covering her mouth with both hands, tears instantly welling in her soft brown eyes.
Adrian pulled a velvet box from his jacket pocket, snapping it open to reveal a magnificent, emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the morning light like a star.
"Clara Bennett," Adrian said, his voice thick with raw, honest devotion. "You walked into my house as a maid, and you became the only person in this world I cannot live without. You gave me back my life, my strength, and my heart."
He looked up into her eyes, his hands steady.
"Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you rule this family by my side?"
Clara looked at the man on one knee before her—the man who had fought through paralysis, betrayal, and war to stand by her side.
"Yes," she choked out through happy tears, stepping close to him. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times, yes!"

Adrian slid the diamond onto her finger, stood up, and pulled her into a passionate, deep embrace, kissing her under the brilliant California sky.
The courtyard erupted into deafening cheers and applause. Guns were raised into the air, capos clapped each other on the back, and Marco smiled broadly from the bottom of the steps, clapping his heavy hands together.
