Chapter 10 - THE MAID WHO STAYED

Six months later.
The quiet evening rain pattered softly against the high glass windows of the grand library. Inside, a roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting a warm, orange glow across the polished wood and leather furniture.
Adrian sat in a large, comfortable armchair near the hearth. His mahogany cane rested against the side of the chair, though he rarely needed it around the house anymore. His recovery had surpassed every medical prediction, driven by daily rehab and the boundless joy of his new life.
On the rug beside his chair sat Clara, her head resting comfortably against his knee. She wore a soft cream sweater, a stack of charity foundation documents resting in her lap. Together, they had used a portion of the family's vast resources to open a research center for spinal cord injuries and a shelter for victims of organized crime.
Adrian’s hand drifted down, his fingers gently playing with her dark, silky hair.
"You're quiet tonight, my love," Adrian murmured softly, his thumb lightly stroking her cheek.
Clara looked up at him, a warm, contented smile gracing her lips. "I was just thinking about the first morning I brought you coffee."
Adrian chuckled, a rich, warm sound that filled the cozy room. "Black, no sugar."
"You were sitting by that big window looking so miserable and cold," she recalled softly. "Vivian was screaming at you, treating you like a broken statue. I remember looking at you and thinking... 'That man is so lonely.'"
"I was," Adrian admitted honestly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "I had millions of dollars, hundreds of men willing to kill for me, and a beautiful estate. But I was completely alone in the dark."
He took her hand, admiring the sparkling diamond band on her ring finger that matched his own gold wedding ring.
"And then a quiet maid walked in with a coffee tray," Adrian whispered, his eyes shining with deep love. "And she looked me in the eyes. Not at my chair. Not at my money. Just at me."
"I saw the man I was going to love for the rest of my life," Clara said softly, reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck.
Adrian pulled her up into his lap, holding her tightly against his chest as the firelight danced around them. Outside, the world was still full of danger, business, and shadows. But inside their sanctuary, there was only warmth, peace, and an unshakable love.
