Chapter 8 - THE SIEGE OF VALE MANOR

At two o'clock on a moonless Thursday morning, the war arrived at the gates of the Vale estate.
The power to the perimeter lights was suddenly cut, plunging the sprawling grounds into absolute blackness. A second later, the sound of a heavy explosive echoed across the valley as the front wrought-iron gates were blown off their hinges.
Inside the dark master study, surveillance monitors flickered to emergency battery power, showing thermal images of four heavily armed SUVs tearing up the long gravel driveway.
"They brought thirty men," Marco reported through a tactical radio handset, standing near the window with a carbine rifle in hand. "Dominic Moretti came himself. He wants your head, Adrian."
Inside the room, Adrian sat in his wheelchair near his oak desk. But he was not defenseless. In his lap rested a sleek, black submachine gun. His eyes were cold, sharp, and totally focused.
Clara stood behind him, holding a small tactical pistol Adrian had taught her to fire over the past two weeks. She was pale, but her hand was steady.
"Clara, step into the safe room behind the bookcase," Adrian ordered quietly, pointing to a heavy steel door disguised within the woodwork.
"No," Clara said firmly. "I'm staying with you."
"Clara—"
"If they get past Marco, you need someone to cover your back while you reload," she insisted, clicking the safety off her pistol with practiced ease. "We stand together, Adrian. You promised."
Adrian looked at her, seeing the fierce, unyielding love in her eyes. A fierce pride swelled in his chest. "Together then."
Outside the study, the house exploded into violence.
Automatic gunfire echoed through the grand corridors. Glass shattered, wood splintered, and shouts rang out as Adrian’s loyal guards met the Moretti hit squad in the hallways. Marco’s men were outnumbered, but they knew every inch of the estate and fought with the desperation of men protecting their home.
For fifteen terrifying minutes, the battle raged through the ground floor.
Then, the gunfight outside the study doors ceased, replaced by heavy, deliberate footsteps approaching down the hallway.
BOOM.
A breach charge blew the double mahogany doors of the study inward, filling the room with smoke and dust.
Through the haze stepped Dominic Moretti—a massive, brutal man in a leather coat, holding a smoking shotgun. Behind him were three surviving hitmen, their weapons raised.
"Well, well," Dominic growled, a grotesque, yellow-toothed grin spreading across his face as he stepped into the room. "The great Adrian Vale. Sitting in his little rolling chair like a helpless grandfather."
Dominic’s eyes shifted to Clara, standing beside the chair. A dark, ugly sneer touched his lips. "And you... the chemist's little girl. I thought my boys burned you in Oakland six months ago. Looks like I get to finish two jobs at once tonight."
Adrian’s jaw locked. The cold rage that filled his veins was absolute.
"You should have stayed in San Jose, Dominic," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm amid the smoke.
"Why?" Dominic chuckled, raising his shotgun toward Adrian’s chest. "What are you gonna do, crippled boy? Run me over?"
In that exact split second, Adrian triggered a hidden foot-pedal switch under his desk.
A bank of blinding, 10,000-lumen emergency halogen floodlights mounted above the bookshelves exploded into light, blinding Dominic and his men instantly.
"MY EYES!" one of the hitmen screamed, covering his face.
Before Dominic could recover, Adrian didn't just sit there.
Driven by pure adrenaline, rage, and two weeks of intense physical therapy, Adrian planted his feet on the floor, gripped the heavy oak desk, and stood up.
He stood on his own two feet, towering over his wheelchair, his weapon raised.
Dominic’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror as he caught sight of the paralyzed boss standing upright through the glare.
"Impossible..." Dominic gasped.
Adrian pulled the trigger.
A hail of gunfire filled the room. Adrian’s shots were surgically precise, dropping the two hitmen behind Dominic before they could even level their rifles.
Dominic tried to raise his shotgun, but Clara fired two quick, clean shots from her pistol, striking Dominic in the shoulder and knocking him off balance.
Adrian took a heavy, deliberate step forward—his boot slamming onto the marble floor with absolute authority—and fired a final, decisive shot.
Dominic Moretti fell backward onto the shattered remains of the study doors, lifeless.
The room fell completely silent, save for the hum of the halogen lights and the heavy breathing of the two survivors.
Smoke drifted through the air.
Adrian stood tall, swaying slightly, but holding his ground. He turned slowly toward Clara.
Clara dropped her pistol onto the desk, her eyes wide with tears, staring at him. Not at the blood, not at the fallen enemies... but at him.
Standing.
"You stood," she whispered, her voice trembling.
May you like
Adrian looked down at his legs, then looked up at her, a breathless, triumphant smile breaking across his bruised face. He took another step toward her, his arms opening.
Clara threw herself into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his waist as he pulled her tight against his chest, supporting his weight together as the storm finally cleared.
