Chapter 4 - The Whispering Ghost

Working in Dante’s private study was an exercise in absolute psychological warfare.

The room was vast, lined with thousands of old leather-bound books, floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the grey ocean, and a massive dark oak desk carved with the crest of the Bellamy family—a crowned wolf standing over a broken sword.

For two weeks, Evelyn performed her duties with silent, meticulous efficiency. She cataloged shipping manifests, organized legal real estate contracts, and fielded calls from international executives. She was intelligent, quick to learn, and possessed a quiet observation skill that Dante noticed immediately, even if he refused to acknowledge it out loud.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Dante was downstairs meeting with his chief enforcer, Marcus, Evelyn was sorting through a stack of archived paper files from fifteen years ago.

Her hand paused over a dusty manila folder labeled Project Aegis - 2011.

She looked toward the heavy oak doors. She could hear the faint murmur of voices from the floor below. Her heart hammered in her throat, but curiosity overcame her caution. She slipped the folder open.

Inside were crime scene photographs of the Bellamy estate fire from fifteen years ago.

Evelyn’s stomach turned as she saw pictures of charred walls, ruined paintings, and official police reports. But as she flipped to the back of the file, a folded yellowed document fell into her lap.

It was an autopsy report and a police interview log signed by the chief investigator of the NYPD in 2011.

Evelyn read the lines quickly, her eyes widening in shock:

...Subject Julian Vance (Alias: Arthur Hart) was questioned regarding the security breach at the Bellamy compound. Subject denied providing access codes. Forensic analysis of the digital ledger indicates the security breach originated from an internal terminal belonging to Victor Bellamy (Uncle of Dante Bellamy)...

Evelyn gasped, her fingers trembling as she re-read the sentence.

Her father hadn't leaked the codes.

Dante’s own uncle, Victor Bellamy, had betrayed his own family from the inside!

Before she could process the revelation, the heavy oak door swung open with a loud click.

Dante stepped into the room, his coat wet from the rain outside. His eyes dropped instantly to the yellowed paper in her trembling hands.

In two terrifying strides, he crossed the room, grabbing her wrist and yanking her out of the leather chair. The folder scattered across the desk.

“What are you touching?!” Dante roared, his cold composure shattering into terrifying rage.

“Look at the report!” Evelyn screamed back, holding the paper up between them despite the agonizing grip he had on her wrist. “Look at it, Dante! Your own police records say my father didn't betray you! It was your uncle! Victor Bellamy leaked the codes!”

Dante’s face turned white. He grabbed the paper from her hand, his eyes scanning the lines with manic intensity. For a second, a look of profound, agonizing confusion crossed his dark features.

Then, his expression hardened back into solid ice. He crumpled the paper in his fist and threw it into the fireplace behind his desk, where the flames instantly consumed it.

“That report was fabricated by the Vance family to create infighting within my Syndicate,” Dante said, his voice shaking with suppressed fury. “My uncle Victor died fighting the Vance family three days after the massacre.”

“Or maybe he was killed to cover up his treason!” Evelyn yelled, stepping closer to him, her green eyes flashing with fearless anger. “You built your entire life on a lie! You bought me for fifty million dollars to avenge a crime my father never committed!”

Dante pinned her against the edge of the heavy desk, leaning over her until there was less than an inch between their faces. His dark eyes were wild, stormy, and dangerous.

“Silence,” he growled, his chest heaving against hers. “You know nothing about my family.”

“I know you’re terrified that I’m right,” Evelyn whispered, refusing to back down. “I know you’re terrified that you spent fifteen years becoming a monster for nothing.”

Dante stared down at her face, his gaze dropping to her trembling, defiant lips. The silence between them grew thick, heavy with an electric, intoxicating tension that made Evelyn’s breath catch in her throat. For a terrifying second, she thought he was going to kiss her.

Suddenly, the encrypted phone on his desk buzzed loudly.

Dante snapped back to reality, stepping away from her and picking up the device. He pressed it to his ear. “Speak.”

May you like

Dr. Harrison’s voice came through the speaker, loud enough for Evelyn to hear:

“Mr. Bellamy, the advanced genetic panel for Evelyn Hart just finished processing through our private server. You need to look at this immediately. She is not Julian Vance’s daughter.”
