Chapter 2 - THE DINNER TABLE MASK

I didn't sleep that night. I lay on my side on the far edge of our king-sized bed, listening to the rhythmic, peaceful sound of Daniel’s breathing.

Every breath he took felt like a blow to my chest. How could a man whisper promises of a new life to his mistress over the phone and then fall asleep beside his wife five minutes later without a single tremor in his conscience?

When the morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting long amber stripes across the bedroom carpet, I slid out from under the covers.

My hands were steady now. The trembling had stopped somewhere around three in the morning, replaced by a dense, unyielding numbness that felt almost like armor.

I walked into the kitchen, turned on the espresso machine, and set the pregnancy test inside a velvet jewelry box at the very bottom of my locked desk drawer in the study.

At 7:30 AM, Daniel walked into the kitchen wearing his gray tailored suit. He looked handsome, fresh, and completely untroubled. He stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist, leaning down to press his lips against my neck.

Six months ago, that touch would have sent a wave of warmth through me. Today, my skin crawled. Every cell in my body revolted against his touch, but I forced myself to remain still.

“Good morning, beautiful,” Daniel murmured into my hair. “You were awake early. Is everything okay with the preliminary designs for the museum project?”

I turned around within his embrace, holding a mug of dark coffee. I looked into his eyes—those warm brown eyes that had convinced me to move across the country with him four years ago.

“Everything is fine,” I said, my voice smooth and measured. “Just thinking about the future.”

Daniel smiled, taking a sip from my cup. “The future is bright, Clara. In fact, I might have some big news soon. The board is meeting this afternoon regarding the senior partnership.”

Senior partnership.

That was where Emma Collins came in. Emma wasn't just a coworker; she was the daughter of Richard Collins, the majority shareholder of Vance & Collins Financial.

A sudden, sharp piece of the puzzle clicked into place inside my mind. Daniel’s affair wasn't just about emotional passion or physical attraction. Daniel was climbing a ladder. And Emma Collins was his golden ticket to the C-suite.

“That’s wonderful, Daniel,” I said, forcing a soft, admiring smile onto my lips. “You’ve worked so hard for Collins.”

“We both have,” he replied, tapping his fingers against the counter. “Oh, by the way… I have a late dinner with the strategy team tonight. Don't wait up for me. Emma and I are finalizing the portfolio pitch for tomorrow.”

He said her name without a single drop of hesitation. He said it with the casual casualness of a man who believed his wife was entirely blind, deaf, and foolish.

“Of course,” I said gently. “Take all the time you need, Daniel.”

He kissed my cheek, grabbed his briefcase from the hall table, and walked out the front door.

The moment the heavy deadbolt clicked shut, I walked over to the kitchen sink and dumped my hot coffee down the drain. I placed my palm flat against my lower stomach, feeling the slight, imperceptible warmth beneath my skin.

“He thinks we’re weak,” I whispered into the quiet kitchen. “He thinks I’m going to cry and beg.”

I walked to my study, opened my laptop, and called Arthur Vance—Daniel’s boss’s retired co-founder, and the man whose private family estate I had spent two years restoring as a lead historic architect.

“Clara, my dear,” Arthur’s voice boomed warmly through the speaker. “To what do I owe the pleasure on a Tuesday morning?”

“Arthur,” I said, keeping my tone perfectly professional. “I need a recommendation for a private forensic accountant. And I need it kept completely outside the firm’s network.”

There was a three-second pause on the line.

“Are you in trouble, Clara?” Arthur asked, his voice dropping into a sharp, protective register.

“No, Arthur,” I answered, staring out the window at the city skyline below. “I’m taking control of my life.”
