Chapter 3 - THE FORENSIC MIRAGE

By Thursday afternoon, I was sitting in a soundproof office on the thirty-second floor of a tower in downtown Chicago.
Across the glass desk sat Julian Mercer, a forensic accountant with graying hair and the sharp, hawkish eyes of a man who spent his life finding money people thought they had successfully buried.
Julian slid a black leather folder across the desk toward me.
“Your husband is clever, Mrs. Vance,” Julian said, resting his elbows on the polished wood. “But he’s arrogant. Arrogant men always leave a digital trail because they assume their wives aren't looking.”
I opened the folder. Inside were thirty pages of bank logs, shell company incorporations, and real estate wire transfers.
“What am I looking at?” I asked.
“Over the last eighteen months,” Julian explained, pointing a silver pen at a flow chart, “Daniel has been diverting portions of your joint architectural design dividends into an offshore entity registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Elegance Properties LLC.”
My throat tightened. “How much?”
“Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars,” Julian replied flatly. “And three weeks ago, Elegance Properties LLC signed a purchase agreement for a two-million-dollar luxury penthouse in Gold Coast.”
I leaned back in my chair, feeling a cold, metallic chill wash over my nerves.
The penthouse wasn't for us. Daniel and I lived in a modest three-bedroom brownstone in Lincoln Park that my parents had helped us purchase with my inheritance money.
“Who is listed as the co-beneficiary on the penthouse title?” I asked, though I already knew the answer.
“Emma Collins,” Julian said. “The down payment was funded fifty percent by Daniel’s diverted dividends and fifty percent by a private transfer from Richard Collins’s personal trust.”
I looked at the numbers on the paper.
Daniel hadn't just cheated on me. He was using my intellectual property—my hard-earned architecture dividends from high-profile commercial restoration projects—to fund a luxury lifestyle for his mistress, with the full knowledge and backing of her powerful father.
They were building a life on my back while preparing to discard me like trash once Daniel secured his partnership.
“Can he legally transfer joint assets without my signature?” I asked.
“He forged your digital authorization on the corporate distribution waivers,” Julian said, pulling a printout of my forged signature from the pile. “This is felony fraud, Clara. If you go to the District Attorney right now, Daniel could face criminal indictment.”
I looked out the window at the cold city below.
If I filed criminal charges right now, Daniel would be arrested. The firm would fire him. The story would hit the local newspapers, and I would be dragged into a messy, public trial while sixteen weeks pregnant.
Daniel would lose his job, but Emma Collins’s father had enough money and legal firepower to insulate his daughter and delay the courts for years, leaving me with scrap settlements and endless stress.
That wasn't enough.
A simple divorce wasn't enough.
Daniel had called Emma and said, “I choose you.”
He had chosen her wealth. He had chosen her influence. He had chosen her father’s power.
“No,” I said softly, turning my eyes back to Julian. “We aren't going to the District Attorney yet.”

Julian raised an eyebrow. “What do you want to do?”
“I want you to track every single asset tied to Richard Collins’s offshore accounts,” I said, my voice steady, cold, and clear. “Daniel wants to play in the deep water with the Collins family. I want to make sure that when he jumps in, there’s no water left in the pool.”
