Chapter 5 - THE TRAP IS LAID

Three days later, I sat in Arthur Vance’s private residential library in Evanston.
The room smelled of old leather books, pipe tobacco, and woodsmoke. Rain tapped gently against the high stained-glass windows overlooking Lake Michigan.
Arthur set a porcelain teacup down on the saucer before me, leaning back in his wingback armchair.
“I’ve reviewed the forensic reports Julian Mercer provided,” Arthur said quietly, his face lined with deep disappointment. “I treated Daniel like a son, Clara. I brought him into Vance & Collins because I believed he had integrity. To learn he’s been forging your name and siphoning funds into an entity tied to Richard’s daughter… it’s a betrayal of everything this firm was founded on.”
“Richard knows, Arthur,” I said, sitting up straight. “Richard isn't just turning a blind eye. He’s using Emma to tether Daniel to the firm so Daniel takes the legal fall for the Zurich offshore transfers.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. “Explain.”
I opened my briefcase and pulled out a secondary financial audit prepared by Julian.
“The Zurich acquisition framework Daniel worked on for Richard,” I explained, sliding the document across the small table. “It isn't an acquisition. It’s an asset-stripping shell maneuver. Richard Collins has been moving bad debt from his personal holdings into Vance & Collins’s primary capital fund. He’s setting Daniel up as the Managing Director of the new subsidiary. When the Securities and Exchange Commission conducts their audit next quarter, Daniel’s signature will be on every illegal transfer document.”
Arthur leaned forward, reading the ledger lines carefully. His hand began to shake slightly with quiet fury.
“Richard is setting up your husband to take a federal prison sentence to clean his own books,” Arthur whispered.
“Yes,” I said. “Daniel thinks he’s being elevated to royalty. In reality, Richard and Emma are buying a fall guy.”
Arthur looked up at me, his old, wise eyes filled with sharp respect. “You could walk away right now, Clara. You could file for divorce, present this to the SEC, and leave Daniel to rot in the hole he dug for himself.”
I placed my hand gently over my stomach.
I was eighteen weeks now. The small bump was beginning to show, though I kept it hidden under tailored coats and loose sweaters.
“If I do that now,” I said, “Richard Collins uses his billions to buy his way out of the investigation, Emma moves to Europe with her trust fund, and Daniel blames me for ruining his career. My child will grow up with a father in prison and a mother who spent years in court fighting for crumbs.”
“What do you want, Clara?” Arthur asked softly.
“I want Daniel to sign over his entire share of our brownstone, his equity in my architectural firm, and his rights to my future royalties before he realizes he’s ruined,” I said. “And then I want to give Richard Collins the exact rope he needs to hang himself and his daughter on live television.”
Arthur looked at me for five long seconds. Then a slow, dangerous smile spread across the old man’s face.
May you like
“Tell me what you need me to do, my dear,” Arthur said.
“Tomorrow morning at the board meeting,” I said, “I want you to propose an immediate, expedited signature clause for the Zurich project… and make sure Daniel is the only authorized signatory.”
