Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

For three days, Gabriel and I worked eighteen hours a day inside the fourth-floor archive room.

We spoke in the language of numbers—balance sheets, invoice numbers, tax filings, and shipping manifests.

I discovered that Gabriel’s reputation as a ruthlessly efficient mob boss was only half the truth. He was a master strategist who used financial precision the way other men used guns. He didn't break legs; he bought debt, seized assets, and squeezed his enemies through legal court receiverships until they begged for mercy.

"Look at this entry from August 2024," I said, pointing my pencil at a line item on page forty-two of Vane Maritime’s master ledger. "Three hundred thousand dollars transferred to an offshore shell company called Blue Wave Logistics in Panama."

Gabriel leaned over my shoulder, his warm breath lightly brushing against my neck, sending a sudden, unexpected spike of heat through my chest. He smelled of dark espresso, sandalwood, and cold rain.

"Blue Wave is owned by Viktor Moretti," Gabriel murmured, his eyes scanning the numbers. "The head of the North End syndicate."

"My father didn't just owe money to you, did he?" I asked, looking up at him. "He borrowed money from Moretti to pay off his casino debts, and when Moretti demanded interest, my father offered him exclusive access to the cold-storage vaults at Pier 42."

"Moretti has been using your father’s docks to smuggle illegal contraband into the city for two years," Gabriel confirmed, straightening up and folding his arms. "Your father lied to me. He told me the debt to Moretti was cleared when I signed the buyout agreement last month."

"Which means," I deduced, my stomach tightening, "Moretti still thinks he owns Pier 42."

"And Moretti doesn't use accountants to resolve contract disputes," Gabriel added grimly.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the archive room swung open.

Marcus stepped inside, his tactical radio buzzing softly at his hip. His face was set in a tight, grim line.

"Director," Marcus said quietly. "Richard Vane is downstairs in the lobby. He brought two men from the North End with him."

Gabriel didn't show a flicker of surprise. He calmly closed the ledger on the table and picked up his suit jacket from the back of his chair.

"Is he armed?" Gabriel asked.

"His guests are," Marcus reported. "They are demanding to see Ms. Vane. They claim she has stolen proprietary corporate records belonging to Vane Maritime."

Gabriel turned to me, his dark eyes cool and unreadable. "Stay here, Clara. Marcus will lock the archive elevator from the master control panel."

"No," I stood up immediately, taking my phone from the table. "My name is on those accounts, Gabriel. If Moretti’s men are downstairs, they are looking for the person who balanced those fake invoices. If you go down there alone, my father will spin whatever lie keeps him alive."

Gabriel looked at me for three long seconds, evaluating my resolve, before a faint, respectful smile touched his lips.

"Put your jacket on, Clara," Gabriel said smoothly. "Let’s go meet your family."
