Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in the Glass Tower

The ground floor lobby of Voss Freight was silent, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass walls that looked out over the gray waters of Boston Harbor.

My father, Richard Vane, stood near the central marble fountain wearing a crumpled navy suit. He looked haggard, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling slightly as he clutched a leather briefcase.

Standing on either side of him were two broad-shouldered men in heavy leather coats, their hands resting ominously inside their pockets.

Moretti’s enforcers.

When the elevator doors opened and I stepped out beside Gabriel and Marcus, my father’s face twisted into a mask of pathetic, desperate rage.

"Clara!" Richard shouted, stepping forward, pointing a shaking finger at me. "You disgraceful, ungrateful girl! You humiliated me in front of two hundred guests! You ran away like a thief in the middle of the night!"

"I didn't run away, Father," I said, my voice steady, echoing clearly across the wide marble floor. "I resigned from Vane Maritime. And I took my personal work ledgers with me."

One of Moretti’s enforcers—a man with a pockmarked face named Sal—took a step forward, his eyes scanning Gabriel with cold hostility.

"Mr. Voss," Sal growled in a deep raspy voice. "Mr. Moretti sent us to collect our property. The ledgers for Pier 42 belong to the North End Syndicate. And the girl is listed as a co-signer on the three-million-dollar credit line Mr. Vane opened with us last year."

Gabriel stepped in front of me, his tall, imposing shadow completely blocking Sal’s view of my face.

"You are standing in my corporate headquarters, Sal," Gabriel said smoothly, his tone low and chillingly polite. "And you are speaking to my wife."

"She’s not your wife!" Richard spat, his voice cracking with hysteria. "She ran out the window before the marriage certificate was recorded with the city clerk! The deal is void, Voss! You don't own her, and you don't own Pier 42!"

Gabriel reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek silver pen and a folded piece of official white parchment.

He unfolded it slowly, revealing the marriage certificate bearing my father’s signature, Gabriel’s signature, and the red official wax seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

"I filed the paperwork with the city clerk at 8:00 AM yesterday morning, Richard," Gabriel announced calmly. "The state considers Clara Vane my legal spouse, and by extension, her equity stake in Vane Maritime now falls under the protective jurisdiction of Voss Freight."

My father’s face drained of all color. "You... you registered it?"

"Which means," Gabriel continued, turning his dark eyes back onto Sal, "that any debt Richard Vane incurred with Viktor Moretti using Pier 42 as collateral was an unauthorized, fraudulent transaction executed without the consent of the primary equity holder—my wife."

Sal’s hand moved inside his coat pocket. "Mr. Moretti doesn't care about your paperwork, Voss."

Before Sal’s hand could clear his jacket, Marcus stepped forward, pulling a heavy tactical pistol from his shoulder holster with lightning speed, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against Sal’s temple.

The second enforcer froze, his hands instantly locking in place.

"You have five seconds to walk out those glass doors, Sal," Gabriel whispered, his dark eyes flashing with a terrifying, absolute authority. "Tell Viktor Moretti that if he wants to talk about Pier 42, he can meet me at the harbor docks tomorrow midnight. Alone."

Sal swallowed hard, feeling the iron barrel pressed against his skull. He slowly backed away, dragging his partner toward the exit doors.

"This isn't over, Voss!" Sal spat as the automatic glass doors slid open, letting in the cold sea wind. "Moretti will take the piers by force!"

They disappeared into the foggy afternoon.

My father stood alone near the fountain, shaking violently, realizing he was trapped between two monsters he could no longer control.
