Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Offer

I stood near the glass wall, watching the rain strike the windowpanes as my father was escorted off the premises by two security guards.

Gabriel walked up behind me, standing two steps back, giving me space.

"He was going to sell me to Moretti, wasn't he?" I asked softly, my reflection in the dark glass showing my pale face. "If I hadn't run down that fire escape... if I had stayed in that room... my father would have handed me over to Moretti’s men to clear his second debt."

"Yes," Gabriel admitted bluntly, offering no comforting lies. "Your father realized three weeks ago that I would not let him use Pier 42 for illegal shipments once I took over. So he tried to play both sides—selling the legal equity to me, and offering the physical control of the docks to Moretti."

I turned around to face him. "And what about you, Gabriel? What do you actually want from this?"

Gabriel looked at me, his dark eyes steady, intelligent, and surprisingly warm.

"I built Voss Freight from three rusted trucks into the largest logistics network on the East Coast," Gabriel said quietly. "I spent fifteen years purging my family’s name of illegal syndicates, dirty money, and back-alley violence. I want Pier 42 because it is the final piece of legal commercial waterfront in this city."

He took a step closer, resting his hand against the glass frame beside my head.

"I didn't marry you to save your father, Clara," Gabriel confessed. "And I didn't marry you to steal your life. I watched you audit those ledgers six months ago when I first looked into Vane Maritime. You were the only person in that entire firm who had the intelligence and the guts to fight your father’s corruption from the inside."

"You wanted a partner," I said, the truth finally dawning on me.

"I wanted a partner who understood the value of an empire," Gabriel agreed, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead. "The legal certificate in my pocket is just paper. But if you walk out those doors today, I will give you half a million dollars, a clean passport, and a new life anywhere in Europe."

I looked down at his silver pen resting on the marble table.

"And if I stay?" I asked, my heart skipping a slow, deliberate beat.

"If you stay," Gabriel whispered, his voice dark and velvety, "we take Pier 42 tomorrow night, we crush Viktor Moretti’s syndicate forever, and you become the Director of Finance for the entire Voss Corporate Group."

May you like

I looked into his eyes, seeing no deceit, no manipulation—only a man offering me the absolute equality I had been denied my entire life.

"Get Marcus," I said, a sharp, cold smile spreading across my lips. "We have a dock fight to plan."
