Chapter 3 - A Debt Paid in Full

The rain had stopped by dawn, leaving the city pavement gleaming like wet asphalt under a gray sky. Emma woke up early, her body aching, though the medical ointment Victor provided had noticeably dulled the throbbing heat on her cheekbone.

At precisely 8:00 AM, three sharp knocks sounded at her door. Emma approached cautiously, looking through the peephole. Standing outside was a sharp-looking woman in a navy suit carrying a medical bag, accompanied by one of Matteo’s men.

"Mrs. Bennett, I am Dr. Aris," the woman said as Emma cracked the door. "Mr. Vance asked me to examine your injuries."

For the next half-hour, the doctor expertly examined Emma’s ribs, wrapping them with medical compression tape and confirming that while two ribs were severely bruised, none were fractured. She left high-grade pain management medication and clear instructions for rest—an impossible luxury for someone working two jobs.

"He expects you to stay home today," Dr. Aris mentioned casually as she packed her bag.

"I can't," Emma said, shaking her head. "I have a shift at the diner in an hour. If I miss it, my manager will replace me by noon."

"Your manager has already been informed that you are taking a paid leave of absence," Dr. Aris replied with a faint, tight smile. "Your salary for the next month has been covered."

Emma stood frozen as the doctor exited. The feeling of control slipping out of her hands was terrifying. Matteo Vance was systematically taking over every aspect of her life, replacing her hardships with forced luxury and absolute security, but offering no explanation as to why a powerful figure would care about a poor waitress and her daughter.

At noon, a knock came again. This time, it wasn't the doctor or a bodyguard.

It was Matteo Vance himself.

He stepped into the narrow entryway of her apartment, instantly making the low-ceilinged room feel smaller. He was impeccably dressed in a dark slate suit, looking completely out of place against her cracked wallpaper and faded rugs.

Nora immediately ran out from the kitchen, holding Teddy high in the air. "Did you fix it? Is the monster gone?"

Matteo looked down at the little girl, his hard face softening just a fraction—a subtle shift that Emma caught, though it vanished as quickly as it appeared. He knelt on one knee, reaching out to tap the nose of the stuffed bear.

"The monster will not come back," Matteo said calmly to Nora. "He has been... permanently relocated."

Emma’s heart jumped into her throat. "What did you do?" she asked softly, stepping between Matteo and her daughter.

Matteo stood up, his eyes meeting hers with unsettling intensity. "Marcus Kane was picked up at a illegal gambling house three hours ago. He was informed that his presence in this state is no longer permitted. He signed a full release of all parental claims and left on a one-way transport out of the region."

"Just like that?" Emma whispered, tears springing to her eyes. "I spent two years filing police reports, getting restraining orders, begging judges... and you made him leave in three hours?"

"The law relies on paperwork and procedure," Matteo said, taking a step toward her. "I rely on consequences. He understood the consequences of remaining here."

"And what do you want from me?" Emma asked, her voice cracking with built-up exhaustion. "Nobody does this for free. What is the price for this, Mr. Vance?"

Matteo looked at her bruised face, his gray eyes darkening. "Your daughter offered me her most valuable possession to secure your safety. That contract was signed and sealed the moment she handed me that bear. I don't break my contracts, Mrs. Bennett."

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a keycard and a small slip of paper with an address printed on it.

"This building is unsafe," Matteo stated coldly, glancing around the small apartment. "The locks are weak, the neighborhood is unmonitored, and you cannot heal in a place that constantly reminds you of what you suffered. A car is waiting downstairs. You and Nora are moving to a secure building uptown."

"No," Emma insisted, backing away. "I appreciate what you did with Marcus—more than you know—but I cannot move into your world. I know who you are. I read the news. You are dangerous."

May you like

Matteo looked at her, his expression unreadable. "I am dangerous to my enemies, Emma. To you and your daughter, I am the only wall standing between you and the rest of the world. You can stay here and risk the next threat, or you can come with me and be safe."

He held out the keycard. Emma looked at the plastic card, then down at Nora, who was looking up at Matteo with pure, innocent trust. The realization washed over Emma with terrifying clarity: she had escaped one monster, only to step directly into the shadow of a far more powerful ruler. And deep down, she knew she had no real choice at all.
