Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed, settling into a quiet, luxurious routine that almost felt normal. Nora was enrolled in a private preschool arranged by Matteo's staff, where she thrived, making friends and leaving behind the trauma of her earlier years. Emma, unable to sit idle, had taken up managing the property's logistics, coordinating with staff and ensuring Nora’s days were filled with light and learning.
Yet, safety in Matteo Vance’s world was always conditional.
One rainy Thursday evening, Matteo arrived later than usual. The crispness of his posture was gone; his tie was loosened, and the dark shadows under his eyes spoke of deep trouble within his network. Behind him, Victor looked grim, carrying a encrypted tablet.
"What happened?" Emma asked, stepping out of the kitchen as Nora slept peacefully in her room.
Matteo didn't answer right away. He poured himself two fingers of scotch from the decanter on the sideboard, drinking it in one quick swallow.
"An old rival," Victor explained quietly when Matteo remained silent. "The Moretti family from the southern district. They heard rumors that Mr. Vance took a interest in a non-syndicate family. They think it's a vulnerability."
Emma felt a cold pit drop in her stomach. "A vulnerability? You mean... me?"
Matteo turned around sharply, his eyes flashing with sudden anger directed at his lieutenant. "That's enough, Victor."
"She needs to know, boss," Victor insisted respectfully. "Moretti’s men were spotted near her daughter's school today. We intercepted them before anything happened, but they are looking for leverage."
Emma staggered back against the counter, her breath catching. "Nora... someone was watching Nora?"
In a second, Matteo crossed the room, grabbing Emma gently by the upper arms to steady her. "Nothing happened to her, Emma. Look at me. She is safe. My men are stationed inside the school grounds. No one will touch her."
"This is what I was afraid of!" Emma cried, tears streaming down her cheeks as she tried to pull away from his grip. "I brought my daughter away from one violent man, only to put her in the middle of a war between organized crime bosses! She isn't safe with you, Matteo! She's a target!"
"She is a target because Moretti thinks she matters to me!" Matteo shouted back, his voice echoing through the massive apartment.
The room fell into an abrupt, stunned silence.
Emma froze, her chest heaving as she stared at him. Matteo’s jaw clutched tight, realizing what he had just admitted out loud. The stone facade he wore to govern his criminal empire had cracked, revealing the truth he had tried to keep buried behind business transactions and protection details.
"She matters to me," Matteo repeated softly, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "And so do you."
Emma looked into his dark gray eyes, seeing for the first time the deep loneliness beneath the ruthless mafia leader. He was a man who lived in a world of betrayal, blood, and endless power struggles, where trust did not exist. Yet, in her cramped basement laundry room, a small girl had offered him a one-eyed bear, and a bruised woman had tried to protect her child without fear of his reputation.
"Matteo..." she whispered, her hand moving involuntarily to rest over his hand on her arm.
"I won't let them hurt you," Matteo said, his thumb brushing against her wrist where her pulse raced. "I will end this before it ever reaches your door."

Before she could answer, his phone buzzed sharply. He glanced at the screen, his expression instantly hardening back into the cold boss of the Vance empire.
"Victor, get the car," Matteo ordered, releasing Emma. "It's time to pay Lorenzo Moretti a visit."
