Chapter 9 - The Trial of Blood

The rain was falling in heavy sheets over Pier 4, pounding against the corrugated tin roof of the massive warehouse. Inside, Joseph was checking the manifests of three shipping containers when the heavy iron doors of the building slid open with a deafening screech.
Matteo walked into the warehouse alone, his long black coat dripping with rainwater. Behind him, emerging from the shadows, were twenty armed men—the most loyal, battle-hardened enforcers of the Vance organization, all with their weapons drawn and pointed directly at Joseph and his small crew.
Joseph dropped his clipboard, his face turning pale as he backed away against a shipping container. "Matteo! What... what is the meaning of this?"
Matteo didn't stop until he was standing five feet away from his cousin. He slowly reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small audio recorder, and pressed play.
Joseph’s own recorded voice echoed through the vast, empty warehouse: "...We'll make it look like her abusive ex-boyfriend came back to finish the job. A tragic, messy civilian incident..."
Joseph fell to his knees, his hands raising in desperate surrender. "Matteo! Please! I was only thinking about the family! About our strength! She's changing you! You're letting down your guard!"
Matteo looked down at his blood relative with cold, unyielding eyes. "The family strength is built on absolute loyalty and respect for my authority, Joseph. You plotted against those under my protection. You broke the most sacred rule of this organization."
"I'm your blood!" Joseph sobbed, tears streaming down his face as the surrounding guards stepped closer, their weapons trained on him. "You can't kill your own blood over a woman and a child!"
"You ceased to be my blood the moment you targeted my family," Matteo said quietly.
He didn't draw a weapon. He simply looked at Victor, who was standing beside the main doorway.
"Take him," Matteo ordered calmly. "Strip him of his assets, his rank, and his name. Send him to our facility in the north. He will spend the rest of his life working the docks under guard. If he ever sets foot in this city again... end him."
Joseph was dragged away, screaming and begging for mercy, his voice fading into the sound of the falling rain outside.

Matteo stood alone in the dark warehouse for a long moment, letting the adrenaline fade. He looked at his hands—hands that had built a criminal empire through strength, fear, and blood. But as he turned to walk back out into the rain toward his waiting car, he realized that for the first time in his life, he wasn't fighting for territory or money.
He was fighting for a future. A future that awaited him on the top floor of a high-rise building uptown.
