Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage

The apartment in the uptown high-rise was larger than any home Emma had ever stepped inside. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping panorama of the city skyline, sunlight poured over polished hardwood floors, and the kitchen was stocked with fresh organic food, fresh linens, and modern appliances.

For Nora, it was a palace. She ran through the spacious living room, marveling at the soft rugs and her own private bedroom painted a pale, soothing blue, complete with a bed that didn't creak when she moved.

For Emma, it was a gilded cage.

Two days had passed since they moved in. Security guards sat in the lobby twenty-four hours a day, and every time Emma tried to leave the building to run a simple errand, a sleek black town car was waiting at the curb with a driver assigned to follow her every move. She felt safe for the first time in years, but that safety came with a heavy weight of dependence.

On the third evening, the door to the apartment opened quietly, and Matteo walked in. He had removed his jacket, his crisp white shirt rolled up at the sleeves, revealing subtle tattoos crawling up his forearms—symbols of his family's long, violent history in the city's underworld.

Nora ran out to greet him immediately. "Look! Teddy has his own bed now!"

Matteo looked down at the little girl, his lips curving into a rare, genuine smile. "I see that. He looks pleased."

"Thank you for the big room, Mr. Tall Man," Nora said, wrapping her small arms around his knee.

Matteo stood still for a second, unaccustomed to such physical affection, before gently placing a hand on her head. "You're welcome, Nora. Go play in your room for a moment. I need to speak with your mother."

Nora scampered off, leaving Emma and Matteo standing in the expansive living room as the sun began to set, casting long orange shadows across the floor.

"You look better," Matteo observed, his eyes tracing the faded mark on her cheek. The purple had turned to a light, faint yellow.

"The doctor's medicine helped," Emma said quietly, keeping her distance near the kitchen island. "Mr. Vance, we need to talk about how I am going to pay for all of this. I can't live off your charity. I need to find a new job, save money, and get our own place."

Matteo walked over to the glass window, looking out over the glowing city below. "You won't be returning to the diner or the cleaning service. Those places are unmonitored and expose you to unnecessary risk."

"I have to work!" Emma said, her voice rising slightly with frustration. "I cannot be your prisoner!"

Matteo turned slowly to face her, his expression cold and calm. "You are not a prisoner, Emma. You are under my protection. There is a difference."

"Is there?" she countered, stepping forward. "I can't go anywhere without two armed men following me. I can't make a choice without your permission. You bought off my ex-boyfriend, moved me into a luxury apartment, and paid my bills. What do you expect in return? What am I to you?"

Matteo took three slow, deliberate strides toward her until he was standing inches away. The sheer force of his presence was overwhelming, yet Emma forced herself to hold his gaze, refusing to flinch.

"You are the woman whose daughter handed me a bear and asked me to protect her mother," Matteo said softly, his voice dropping an octave. "In my world, when a promise is made, it is absolute. I don't expect anything from you, Emma. No rent, no favors, no gratitude. But as long as you carry my mark of protection, no one in this city will ever lay a finger on you again."

"And if I want to leave?" she challenged.

Matteo reached out, his long fingers gently hovering near her jaw line, just above the healing bruise, without quite touching her skin.

May you like

"Then you may leave," he said quietly. "But until I am certain that the world outside can no longer hurt you... you stay where I can see you."

The tension in the room was thick, charged with something far more complicated than simple fear. Emma felt a shiver run down her spine—not of terror, but of a strange, intoxicating sensation of being utterly shielded by a man who could destroy whole empires with a single word.
