Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Era

The rain finally stopped as the first golden rays of dawn broke over the horizon, casting a brilliant light across the roses in the garden suite courtyard.
I hadn't slept a single minute. I sat by the wide French doors, watching the outer gate, holding Mia while Nero lay silently at my feet, his dark head resting on my knees.
At six-thirty in the morning, the heavy iron gates swung open.
A convoy of black SUVs pulled into the courtyard. The vehicles were splattered with mud and rain, but they moved in triumphant, orderly formation.
The lead SUV stopped right in front of the garden suite entrance.
The door opened, and Alessandro stepped out.
His tactical vest was gone, replaced by his dark coat. His face was tired, stained with faint smudges of soot, but he moved with the tall, proud posture of a conqueror.
Nero let out a sharp, joyful bark, sprinting across the courtyard toward his master.
I stood up, setting Mia down on her feet, and ran out onto the stone patio.
Alessandro met me halfway, opening his arms and pulling me fiercely into his chest, lifting me slightly off my feet as I wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder, sobbing with overwhelming relief.
"It's over," Alessandro whispered against my hair, holding me tight. "The Moretti syndicate is dismantled. The harbor is secure. No one will ever threaten this house again."
Mia came running out onto the patio, trailing her plush white rabbit behind her. "Uncle Alessandro!"
Alessandro lowered me down, dropping to one knee, and caught Mia as she threw her arms around his neck. He picked her up effortlessly, cradling her against his broad chest, holding my hand with his free fingers.
"Did you catch the bad guys?" Mia asked, her wide brown eyes full of innocent curiosity.
"We took care of everything, little one," Alessandro smiled, kissing her forehead. "And now, this house is completely safe."
He turned his gaze back to me, his dark gray eyes holding mine with a deep, permanent devotion.
"Nora," Alessandro said, his voice quiet and steady in the crisp morning air. "Three weeks ago, you were standing in the great hall, facing a world that was trying to tear you down. Today, I want you to stay here—not as my employee, not as the supervisor... but as my partner. As the mistress of this estate."
My breath caught in my throat. Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled down my cheeks.
"Are you asking me to marry you, Don Alessandro?" I whispered, a tearful laugh escaping my lips.
"I am asking you to share my life, my home, and my name," Alessandro answered, his thumb wiping a tear from my eye. "You and Mia saved this house. Now let me spend the rest of my life protecting yours."

I looked at my daughter, who was smiling happily in his arms, and then up at the magnificent mansion glowing in the golden morning light.
"Yes," I whispered, leaning in to kiss him beneath the rising sun. "Yes, Alessandro. We're home."
