Chapter 9 - The Fall of Moretti

By midnight, the Conti estate had been converted into a command center for a full-scale mob war.

Armored black SUVs filled the courtyard, their engines idling quietly in the rain. Dozens of heavily armed men in dark suits moved through the great hall, receiving orders from Dom, checking weapons, and reviewing digital maps of the city's harbor district.

I sat in the small private parlor adjoining Alessandro’s study, holding a sleeping Mia in my lap. She was wrapped in her fleece blanket, clutching her plush white rabbit, blissfully unaware that a war was about to be unleashed across the city.

The door opened, and Alessandro stepped inside.

He was fully dressed in black tactical gear, a bulletproof vest strapped across his chest, a sidearm holstered at his hip. He looked every bit the terrifying mafia Don that the world feared.

Yet, when his eyes fell on Mia and me, the harsh, lethal lines of his face instantly softened.

He walked across the room, kneeling beside my chair, resting his large hand over mine.

"The estate is locked down, Nora," Alessandro said softly. "Fifty guards are stationed at the perimeter. The safe room beneath the garden suite is active. No one will touch you or Mia while I am gone."

"Are you going yourself?" I asked, my voice filled with a sudden, overwhelming fear for him. "Alessandro... it's dangerous."

A small, sad smile touched his lips. "Moretti sent assassins into my home. He put my household in danger. He put you in danger. In our world, a Don who does not destroy those who attack his home is a Don who loses everything."

He reached out, his thumb gently stroking my cheek. "I have spent forty years living in the dark, Nora. I thought this house was just a fortress to keep my enemies out. But over the last three weeks... you and your daughter gave this place a soul."

My throat tightened. Tears welled in my eyes as I reached up, my hand covering his on my cheek. "Come back to us, Alessandro. Promise me you'll come back."

Alessandro leaned forward, pressing a soft, long kiss against my forehead, and then lowered his lips to mine.

The kiss was deep, fiercely passionate, and filled with a desperate, unspoken promise. I kissed him back with everything I had, wrapping my free arm around his neck, holding him as if I could anchor him to the earth.

When he pulled back, his dark eyes were burning with a powerful, unshakeable flame.

"I will always come back to you, Nora," he whispered.

He stood up, looking down at Mia one last time, gently patting her small head, before turning and walking out of the room.

Ten minutes later, the roar of thirty heavy SUV engines echoed through the courtyard as Alessandro Conti led his army into the rainy night to shatter his enemies.
