Chapter 4 - A Shift in Power

The great hall felt utterly transformed. The reign of terror that Greta Halsey had maintained over the domestic staff for twenty-two years had been shattered in less than fifteen minutes.

The thirty-two remaining employees stood in absolute silence, their eyes wide with shock, terror, and a sudden, tentative sense of awe. They looked at me—the quiet, junior maid who had been on the verge of being thrown into the street thirty minutes ago—and then at my daughter, who was still holding onto the knee of the most dangerous man in the city.

Alessandro adjusted his cuffs, taking a deep breath before turning to face the gathered staff.

"The head housekeeper position is vacant," Alessandro announced, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the vast room. "Until a permanent replacement is selected, all domestic staff will report directly to Dom. Any employee who attempts to enforce unauthorized rules, extort fellow workers, or engage in dishonesty will face the same fate as Greta Halsey. Am I understood?"

"Yes, Don Alessandro," the thirty-two staff members answered in unison, bowing their heads respectfully.

"Dismissed. Return to your duties."

With incredible speed and quiet efficiency, the staff dispersed, vanishing down hallways and side corridors, eager to get far away from the center of the Don’s focus.

Within moments, only Alessandro, Dom, Nero the Doberman, Mia, and I remained in the vast, echoing hall.

I slowly rose from my knees, my legs feeling like lead. I smoothed down my crumpled navy apron, pulling Mia close to my hip. My head was spinning. The sheer adrenaline that had sustained me through the nightmare of the past hour was beginning to fade, leaving me lightheaded and exhausted.

"Mr. Conti," I began, my voice trembling as I looked up into his cold, handsome face. "I... I don't know how to thank you. If you hadn't pulled the footage... if Mia hadn't found you..."

"You do not need to thank me for doing what is just, Nora," Alessandro said, his gray eyes fixing on mine. "You were wronged inside my home. That is my failure, not yours."

He looked down at Mia, who was watching him with wide, curious eyes, entirely unaware that she had just altered the fate of the entire estate.

"Your daughter is remarkably observant," Alessandro noted, a tiny, almost imperceptible trace of warmth touching his voice. "And extraordinarily brave."

"She didn't mean to call you 'Uncle,' sir," I hurried to explain, feeling a flush of embarrassment hit my cheeks. "I am so sorry. She doesn't understand—"

"It is fine," Alessandro interrupted smoothly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a clean, silver-trimmed linen handkerchief, and handed it to me. "Wipe her face."

I took the handkerchief, my fingers accidentally brushing against his warm leather gloves. A sudden, strange shiver ran down my spine. "Thank you, sir."

I gently wiped the tear tracks and dirt smudges from Mia's cheeks. She giggled softly, leaning against my hip.

"Nora," Alessandro said, his tone turning serious and professional. "You will no longer work as a junior maid."

My heart gave a sudden, panicked thud. "Sir?"

"Your quarters in the staff wing are inadequate," he continued, taking the tablet from Dom and flicking through a set of estate files. "Greta forced you and your child into a room built for single workers. That ends today. Dom will move your belongings to the east wing garden suite."

I stared at him in disbelief. The east wing garden suite was a luxurious, four-room apartment with a private balcony, usually reserved for visiting high-level guests or family members.

"Mr. Conti, I can't accept that," I stammered. "I am just a maid. The other staff—"

"The other staff will follow orders," Alessandro stated firmly. "Furthermore, I am appointing you as the temporary supervisor of the private quarters. You will oversee the care of the master suite and the primary art collection. Your salary will be tripled, effective immediately."

My jaw dropped. I felt completely overwhelmed, as if the ground beneath my feet were shifting faster than I could keep my balance. "Sir... why are you doing this for me?"

Alessandro looked at me for a long, quiet moment. His gray eyes seemed to see straight through my worn apron, through my fears, and deep into my soul.

"Because you were honest when everyone else was silent," Alessandro said softly. "And because a child who protects her mother deserves to live in a house where she is safe."

He reached down, his large, calloused hand gently patting Nero’s dark head. The massive Doberman let out a soft whine of satisfaction, stepping forward to sniff Mia’s small shoes. Mia didn't shrink away; she reached out her tiny hand and gently patted the dog's velvet-soft snout.

Alessandro watched the interaction, a small, subtle smile touching the corner of his lips.

"Dom," Alessandro said, turning back toward the grand staircase. "Ensure Nora and her daughter are settled into the garden suite before evening. And order a new plush rabbit to replace the one Greta damaged."

"Right away, Don Alessandro," Dom replied with a respectful nod.

Alessandro turned his back and began walking up the grand marble staircase, Nero heel-stepping precisely at his side. He stopped on the landing, looking down at us over his shoulder one last time.

"Welcome to the family wing, Nora," he said quietly. "Rest today. Tomorrow, your real work begins."
