Chapter 6 - The Private Study

The private study of Don Alessandro Conti looked less like an office and more like a fortress library built for a medieval king.
Floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves lined three walls, packed with thousands of leather-bound volumes, legal ledgers, and ancient historical texts. A massive stone fireplace dominated the far side of the room, where a bright, roaring fire cast dancing orange light across the plush leather sofas and Persian rugs. Behind a massive desk carved from a single slab of dark walnut, Alessandro sat reviewing a stack of financial documents.
Nero lay stretched out on the rug in front of the fire, his black coat gleaming in the warm light. When I stepped inside, the dog raised his head, let out a soft huff, and rested his chin back down on his paws.
Alessandro looked up from his papers. His charcoal jacket was off, draped over the back of his leather chair. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, muscular arms covered in faint, intricate dark ink tattoos that disappeared beneath his cuffs.
For a second, his eyes swept over me, taking in the black linen dress, my brushed hair, and my composed posture. A look of quiet approval flashed across his features.
"Nora," he said, gesturing toward the leather armchair across from his desk. "Sit."
I stepped across the soft rug and took a seat, sitting upright with my hands folded neatly in my lap. "Good evening, Mr. Conti."
"Alessandro," he corrected smoothly, closing the folder in front of him. "When we are in private, call me Alessandro."
I blinked, surprised by the invitation. "Alessandro," I repeated, the name feeling strange yet strangely natural on my tongue.
He reached into a wooden humidor on his desk, pulled out a long cigar, but didn't light it. He simply held it between his fingers, watching me with that unblinking, analytical intensity that was uniquely his.
"How is your daughter settling into the garden suite?" he asked.
"She loves it," I replied, a genuine smile touching my lips. "And thank you for the new rabbit. She hasn't let go of it all afternoon."
"Good," Alessandro said softly. "Children should not bear the burdens of adult malice."
He leaned back in his leather chair, resting his hands on the armrests. "I brought you here tonight because I need to make certain things clear, Nora. The events of this morning were not an isolated incident."
My smile faded. "What do you mean?"
"Greta was corrupt, but she was not working alone," Alessandro explained, his voice dropping into a serious, icy tone. "She was receiving regular payments from an outside rival syndicate—the Moretti family. They have been trying to plant an informant inside my household staff for over two years to gain access to my private safe and security schedules."
I gasped, my blood running cold. "She was selling your secrets?"
"She was attempting to," Alessandro nodded. "Framing you with the jeweled clock was her way of creating a major distraction. While the estate security was focused on searching your quarters and processing your dismissal, Greta intended to copy the encryption key for the master gallery safe."
He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the desk, looking straight into my eyes.
"You and your daughter accidentally shattered a plan that was eighteen months in the making," Alessandro continued. "Mia seeing Greta in the locker corridor forced Greta to panic and accelerate her timeline, exposing her before she could hand the encryption keys to Moretti's men."
"So... we were just lucky," I murmured, feeling a cold sweat prickle my skin.
"Luck had nothing to do with it," Alessandro said firmly. "You survived because you raised a child who pays attention, and because you refused to break under pressure. That is why I am putting you in charge of the private quarters."
He pulled a small velvet-lined box from his desk drawer and slid it across the smooth walnut wood toward me.
I opened the box. Inside lay a sleek, silver keycard embossed with the Conti crest—a striking emblem of a crowned falcon perched above a crossed sword and rose.
"That keycard opens every door in this mansion, including my private suite," Alessandro said. "There are only three people in the world who hold that level of access: Dom, myself, and now you."
I stared at the silver keycard, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Alessandro... this is too much responsibility. I am just a maid. What if I make a mistake?"
May you like
Alessandro stood up from his desk, walking slowly around the edge until he stood right beside my chair. He reached down, his large, warm fingers gently taking the keycard from the box and pressing it directly into my palm, wrapping my fingers over the cold metal.
"You won't make a mistake, Nora," he whispered, his voice vibrating deep in his chest as he looked down at me. "Because unlike everyone else in this house... I know you cannot be bought."
