Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The air inside the Maybach vanished. I pressed my back against the leather door, my hands clutching the canvas tote bag over my stomach as if I could physically hide the truth from his razor-sharp gaze.
"How... how do you know that?" I whispered, my voice barely audible above the quiet hum of the engine.
Alessandro didn't answer immediately. He leaned back, resting his arm on the central leather console, his long fingers drumming a slow, deliberate rhythm.
"I control three major pharmaceutical distribution chains in Illinois, Emma," he said quietly. "When an alias linked to a suspicious catering file triggers an insurance database ping for early obstetric bloodwork and prenatal care, it reaches my desk within an hour."
He leaned closer, his shadow falling over me. The amber in his eyes burned with a mixture of intense possession and deep, dangerous curiosity.
"Six weeks, Emma," he murmured. "The exact timeline matches the night you spent in my bed at the Obsidian."
"It... it could be anyone's," I lied, desperation making me reckless. "You don't know that. I have a life. I see other people."
The moment the lie left my lips, the atmosphere inside the car dropped below freezing.
Alessandro reached out, his long fingers firmly cupping my chin, forcing me to look directly into his eyes. His touch was warm, but his grip was absolute steel. He didn't hurt me, but he made it impossible for me to turn away.
"Do not lie to me," he commanded softly, his voice carrying an edge that made my skin prickle. "I had my men watch you for the last three weeks before I came to your door today. You work fourteen-hour shifts at a greasy diner, you spend four hours a night at the library studying cardiovascular pharmacology, and you sleep in a separate bedroom from your paramedic friend. You don't see anyone. You have never looked at another man the way you looked at me in Room 1520."
My throat worked, but no words came out. He had dismantled my defenses in less than two minutes.
"Is it mine?" he asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
I squeezed my eyes shut, tears threatening to spill over my lashes. "Alessandro, please... just let me go. I don't want your money. I don't want a settlement. I will sign whatever non-disclosure agreement your lawyers draft. I'll leave Chicago. You never have to see me or hear from me again."
"Answer the question, Emma," he demanded, his hand gently tracing the line of my jaw, his thumb brushing away a stray tear. "Is the child mine?"
"Yes!" I sobbed, opening my eyes to face him. "Yes, it's yours! Are you happy now? You have your answer! Now leave me alone!"
Alessandro didn't look shocked. He didn't look panicked. Slowly, a dark, profound expression settled over his features—a look of absolute ownership.
He released my chin, pulled a crisp silk handkerchief from his pocket, and gently dabbed the wetness beneath my eyes.
"I am not going to leave you alone, Emma," he said softly. "You are carrying a Vitali. Which means your life as a waitress in a dilapidated apartment building ends today."
"No!" I snapped, pulling back from his touch. "I have a life! I am two semesters away from finishing nursing school! I have exams next week! You can't just dictate my life because of one night!"
"I can, and I will," Alessandro replied smoothly. He glanced out the window as the Maybach turned off the main highway, entering the private, gated driveway of a massive estate nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan. "You need proper medical care, high-level security, and a stress-free environment. You will live at my private residence in Lake Forest until the child is born."
Panic, cold and sharp, seized my heart. Lake Forest was an isolated enclave of old-money estates, miles away from my diner, my school, and Liam.
"This is kidnapping!" I yelled, grabbing the door handle. The lock was electronically engaged. "Let me out! Marco, open the door!"
Marco, sitting in the front passenger seat, didn't move a muscle.
"Marco answers only to me, Emma," Alessandro said calmly. "And this is not a kidnapping. It is a protective custody measure. The Vitali family has many enemies in this city. If my rivals discover that a woman is carrying my firstborn child, you will become a target before nightfall."
The car came to a smooth stop in front of a sprawling, limestone mansion that looked like a European chateau. Columns of marble framed the grand entrance, surrounded by acres of manicured gardens and high stone walls topped with security cameras.
Alessandro stepped out of the car and extended his hand to me.
"Welcome to your new home, Emma," he said softly.
I stared at his outstretched hand. I knew that if I stepped out of this car and entered that house, I was entering a golden cage. But looking at the armed security personnel patrolling the perimeter, I realized I had no choice.
I placed my hand in his. His fingers closed around mine, warm and unyielding.
As he led me up the marble steps, my mind raced. I was trapped in the lion's den. Alessandro believed he had captured a fragile, poor waitress named Emma. He didn't know that inside his house, walking beside him, was Elizabeth Vance—the daughter of the man his family’s corporate empire had destroyed four years ago.

And as I crossed the threshold into his grand foyer, I realized something even more terrifying: I wasn't just afraid of Alessandro discovering my real identity.
I was afraid of how easily my heart raced every time his hand touched mine.
