Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

"Elizabeth," he repeated. The name sounded heavy, ancient, and lethal on his tongue.
I stood beside the wicker chair in the conservatory, my heart hammering so hard I thought it would crack my ribs. The rain outside lashed violently against the glass roof, filling the heavy silence between us with a rhythmic, pounding roar.
"Alessandro, please let me explain—"
"How long?" he interrupted. His voice wasn't raised. It was unnervingly calm, the kind of quiet that precedes a catastrophic storm. "How long have you known who I was?"
"Since the night of the gala," I confessed, my voice trembling. "I knew who your family was. Everyone in Chicago knows the Vitali name."
Alessandro took a slow step forward. "Did you target me?"
The question hit me like a physical blow. "What? No! Of course not!"
"You were working a catering shift at the Obsidian," Alessandro said, his tone analytical, ruthless, and devoid of warmth. "You spilled champagne near my path. You gave me a fake name. You came to my room, sat on my sofa, and listened to me talk about my family for five hours while carrying the blood of my greatest corporate enemy."
"It wasn't a setup!" I yelled, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "I lost my tray because I was nervous! I didn't plan Room 1520! Your supervisor handed me that key card, not the other way around!"
"And why did you use the name Emma?" Alessandro demanded, stepping closer, his amber eyes burning into mine. "Why hide your identity for four years?"
"Because your family destroyed my life!" I screamed back, years of suppressed grief and rage pouring out of me. "Four years ago, my father discovered that your father’s development company was illegally seizing residential properties in the West Loop using forged deeds! When my father threatened to go to the state prosecutor, your family ruined him! They froze his accounts, leaked fake stories to the press calling him a fraud, and drove him into a stress-induced stroke!"
Alessandro didn't flinch, but his jaw clenched so tightly I heard the joint click.
"I took my dead cousin’s name because I was afraid!" I sobbed, clutching my stomach. "I was twenty-one years old, broke, orphaned, and hiding from men in black suits who were watching my father’s funeral! I didn't come to your hotel room to spy on you, Alessandro! I went there because... because for one foolish night, I wanted to forget that my life was a disaster! I fell for your gentleness! I didn't know I was going to get pregnant!"
Alessandro stared at me, his breathing shallow. He looked at my tears, at the way my hands protectively cradled my belly, at the raw, undisguised agony on my face.
The cold, corporate executioner mask he wore slowly began to crack.
"Where are the ledgers?" he asked softly.
I froze. "What?"
"Your father’s ledgers," Alessandro said, taking another step toward me until he was standing directly in front of me. "The evidence Richard Vance compiled against my father's acquisitions. Victoria knows who you are now, Elizabeth. Which means her father, Senator Sterling, knows. By nightfall, the state prosecutor and every corrupt player in this city will know that Elizabeth Vance is alive and carrying my child."
I stared at him, terror gripping my heart anew. "They... they think I have the ledgers."
"Do you?" Alessandro asked, his voice dropping into a fierce whisper.
"Yes," I whispered back, unable to lie to him anymore. "In a safety deposit box at the First City Bank downtown."
Alessandro closed his eyes for a second, letting out a long, heavy breath. When he opened them, the anger in his amber eyes was gone, replaced by a dark, terrifying resolve.
He reached out and grabbed my face gently in both hands, wiping my tears away with his thumbs. The touch was so suddenly warm, so fiercely protective, that it caught me off guard.
"Listen to me very carefully, Elizabeth," Alessandro said, his voice laced with absolute authority. "My father was a ruthless man. He did things in the name of building this empire that I have spent the last five years trying to clean up. I didn't know the full extent of what he did to Richard Vance until two years ago."
I gasped, looking up at him in shock. "You... you knew?"
"I knew my father framed him," Alessandro admitted quietly, remorse shadowing his sharp features. "I couldn't fix the past, Elizabeth. But I swear on my mother’s memory, I did not know you were his daughter when I held you in Room 1520. I didn't choose you because of a war. I chose you because when I looked into your eyes, I saw the only real thing in a room full of fakes."
My breath hitched. My heart beat wildly against my ribs.
"Now," Alessandro continued, his eyes flashing like molten gold, "Victoria and her father are going to use your identity to destroy us both. They want those ledgers to blackmail my board, and they will use you as leverage to get them."
"What are we going to do?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
May you like
Alessandro pulled me close, wrapping his arms around my waist, holding me tightly against his broad chest.
"We stop hiding," Alessandro said against my hair. "We go downtown, we retrieve your father's ledgers, and we tear the Sterling family’s corruption to the ground together."
