Chapter 8 - The Bank Heist

The next morning, Chicago was blanketed in a thick, grey fog rolling off Lake Michigan.

A three-car armored convoy sped down Michigan Avenue, escorting Alessandro’s Maybach toward the financial district. Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was taut as a piano wire.

I sat beside Alessandro, dressed in a sharp dark green wool coat and trousers he had ordered for me. My dark hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail. Beside us sat a sleek black leather briefcase.

Alessandro held my hand, his thumb rhythmically stroking my knuckles. He was dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, a heavy silver watch glinting on his wrist, looking every inch the powerful billionaire ready for war.

"Marco has swept the bank," Alessandro said quietly, looking at me. "The vault manager is a personal contact of mine. He has pre-cleared our access to Safety Deposit Box 412."

"And Senator Sterling?" I asked nervously.

"Sterling’s men are watching the building," Alessandro replied, a dark, dangerous smirk playing on his lips. "They think we are walking into a trap. They don't realize I bought the bank's parent holding company three years ago."

The Maybach pulled into the private underground parking garage of the First City Bank. Ten armed security guards formed a tight perimeter around us as Alessandro helped me out of the vehicle.

We descended into the sub-basement vault area via a private elevator. The vault manager, an elderly man in a formal suit, bowed respectfully as Alessandro approached.

"Mr. Vitali. Miss Vance," the manager said smoothly. "Box 412 is prepared in Viewing Room B."

He led us into a secure, soundproof room lined with polished steel walls. Resting on a black velvet table in the center was a rusted, heavy steel safety deposit box.

My breath hitched as I stepped toward it. It had been four years since I last touched this box—the day after my father’s funeral, when I was terrified, alone, and running for my life.

Alessandro stood by the door, giving me space, his eyes watching me with deep respect.

I pulled the tiny silver key from a chain around my neck, inserted it into the lock, and turned it. The heavy mechanism clicked open.

Inside lay two thick, leather-bound accounting ledgers, filled with my father’s neat, precise handwriting, alongside a stack of encrypted flash drives containing digital property transfers, bank wire receipts, and illegal land seizure documents signed by Senator Sterling and Alessandro’s late father.

"This is it," I whispered, tears welling in my eyes as my fingers brushed my father’s handwriting. "Everything he died to protect."

Alessandro walked over to the table. He looked down at the ledgers, then looked at me.

"Your father was a brave man, Elizabeth," Alessandro said quietly. "He stood against giants."

"And now?" I asked, looking up at him. "What happens when the public sees these? Your family name will be dragged through the mud. Your stock value will drop."

Alessandro reached out, taking the ledgers from the box and sliding them neatly into the black leather briefcase. He locked the briefcase with a digital passcode, then turned to face me.

"My family's past sins are not my future, Elizabeth," Alessandro said softly, his hands resting gently on my waist. "Our child will not inherit an empire built on lies. I am going to release these ledgers to the federal prosecutor myself."

I stared at him, stunned. "You're going to hand them over yourself?"

"It is the only way to clear your father’s name completely," Alessandro explained, his amber eyes burning with absolute sincerity. "And it is the only way to destroy Sterling once and for all. I will take the financial hit, rebuild the company on clean ground, and give our family a fresh start."

Before I could answer, the red emergency strobe light on the viewing room wall began to flash silently.

The heavy steel door of the viewing room slid open, and Marco stepped inside, his hand resting on his sidearm.

"Boss," Marco said urgently. "We have a situation upstairs. Senator Sterling’s federal marshals just entered the lobby with a fake impound warrant. They are blocking the main exit."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. He picked up the leather briefcase in one hand and took my hand firmly in the other.

"Let's go show the Senator," Alessandro said coldly, "what happens when you corner a Vitali."
