Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

Two weeks passed in a surreal blur of luxury, medical appointments, and growing emotional intimacy.

Alessandro began spending less time at his corporate headquarters downtown and more time working from his home office at the estate. Every evening, he insisted on having dinner with me in the small dining room. We spoke about books, architecture, and philosophy, carefully avoiding the topics of his business or my past.

With every passing day, the icy wall between us was melting. I found myself looking forward to his footsteps in the hallway, his quiet laughter, and the gentle way his hand rested against my back whenever we walked through the estate gardens.

I was falling in love with my captor. And that made the situation ten times more dangerous.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Alessandro was stuck in a high-level conference call in his study, I was sitting in the conservatory reading a medical textbook that Alessandro had ordered for me.

The heavy glass doors of the conservatory opened, and Marco walked in. His expression was unusually tense.

"Miss Emma," Marco said formally. "You have a visitor. I tried to turn her away at the front gate, but she presented a personal security clearance from the senior board."

Before I could ask who it was, a woman stepped into the conservatory behind Marco.

She was stunning. Tall, slender, with blonde hair styled in a flawless bob, wearing a cream tailored Chanel suit and high heels that clicked sharply against the marble floor. She carried herself with the cold, arrogant confidence of old Chicago royalty.

This was Victoria Sterling—the daughter of Chicago’s senior senator, a high-society heiress, and according to the tabloid magazines I used to read at the diner, Alessandro Vitali’s prospective fiancée.

Victoria’s sharp blue eyes swept over me, taking in my simple oversized sweater, my bare feet, and the nursing textbook on my lap. A look of profound, aristocratic disgust crossed her face.

"So," Victoria said, her voice smooth and dripping with venom. "This is the little charity case Alessandro has been hiding away in Lake Forest for the last month."

Marco stepped forward defensively. "Miss Sterling, Mr. Vitali is currently in a private meeting—"

"Quiet, Marco," Victoria snapped, waving a manicured hand dismissively. "I am a member of the Vitali Holdings advisory board. I don't need permission to inspect Alessandro's private properties."

She walked toward me, stopping two feet away. She leaned down, her eyes locking onto my face with terrifying precision.

"You look remarkably familiar," Victoria murmured, her eyes narrowing as she studied my features. "Where have I seen your face before?"

Panic flared in my chest, but I kept my posture rigid, refusing to let her see me sweat. "I used to work catering events in the city. You probably saw me carrying a tray."

"No," Victoria replied slowly, her voice dropping into a chilling tone. "I don't look at catering staff. I remember faces from high-society galas four years ago. Before Richard Vance was exposed as a traitor to the city's development board."

My breath caught in my throat. My hands clenched tightly into the fabric of my sweater.

"You're Richard Vance's daughter," Victoria whispered, a cruel, triumphant smile spreading across her lips. "Elizabeth Vance."

Marco froze, his head snapping toward me in utter shock. "What did you say?"

"She's Elizabeth Vance, Marco!" Victoria laughed, turning to look at the security chief. "Look at her! The dark hair, the green eyes—she's the daughter of the whistleblower who tried to send Alessandro's father to federal prison four years ago!"

Victoria turned back to me, her eyes flashing with pure malice. "What are you doing in this house, Elizabeth? Did you seduce Alessandro to get revenge for your traitorous father? Are you trying to blackmail him?"

"I'm not blackmailing anyone!" I shouted, standing up from my chair, my voice shaking with rage and fear. "My father was not a traitor! Your family and the Vitalis stole his land and framed him!"

"How dare you!" Victoria raised her hand, stepping forward as if she intended to slap me across the face.

"Touch her, Victoria," a dark, thunderous voice echoed from the conservatory entrance, "and I will ensure your father loses his senate seat before sunset."

Alessandro stood in the doorway.

He was breathing heavily, his suit jacket discarded, his tie loosened at his collar. His face was a mask of cold, terrifying rage—a rage so intense that the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.

Victoria pulled her hand back, stepping away from me, though she tried to maintain her composure. "Alessandro! You don't understand! This woman—she lied to you! She isn't some poor waitress named Emma! She is Elizabeth Vance!"

Alessandro didn't look at Victoria. His amber eyes were locked entirely on me.

The silence that followed was suffocating. I stood there, exposed, my true identity stripped away in front of the man I was carrying a child for—the man whose family my father had fought until his dying breath.

"Alessandro..." I whispered, my voice breaking. "I..."

"Marco," Alessandro said softly, his voice dangerously quiet. "Escort Miss Sterling off my property. Revoke her security clearance immediately."

"Alessandro, you can't be serious!" Victoria shrieked as Marco firmly grabbed her elbow. "She’s a spy! She’s the daughter of your enemy!"

"Get her out of my sight," Alessandro commanded, his voice cold as steel.

Marco dragged the screaming heiress out of the conservatory, slamming the heavy glass doors behind them.

I was left alone with Alessandro.

He stood ten feet away from me, his towering frame silent, his expression unreadable. The amber in his eyes burned with an emotion so intense, so dark, that I couldn't tell if he was going to wrap me in his arms or destroy me completely.

"Elizabeth," he said slowly, speaking my real name for the very first time.

And for the first time since I had met him, I was truly, deeply terrified.
