Chapter 9 - The Collapse

The aftermath was swift, brutal, and absolute.

Within twenty-four hours of the Four Seasons disaster, SwiftFreight’s stock price crashed from eighty-five dollars a share to sixty-two cents, wiping out over seven billion dollars in market valuation overnight.

Deutsche Bank and four major American lending institutions filed emergency asset seizure orders, locking down SwiftFreight’s corporate headquarters, warehouse facilities, and transport fleets.

The forty-million-dollar fraudulent marital debt Mason had tried to pin on me was formally voided by the Minnesota State Superior Court following the presentation of the video confession.

Instead, the court ordered the full forfeiture of Gavin’s personal assets—including his lakefront mansion, his luxury car collection, and his private stock holdings—to satisfy my civil damages for domestic assault and fraud.

Three months later, I sat inside the courtroom of the Hennepin County District Court for the final sentencing hearing.

Gavin, Mason, and Charlotte sat at the defense table, wearing bright orange county jail jumpsuits, their hands tethered to their waists by heavy steel chains.

Gavin looked entirely broken. He had lost thirty pounds, his hair was graying at the temples, and his eyes were completely dead. Charlotte sat beside him, refusing to look at him, her face sullen and bitter after months in detention.

The judge, Honorable Beatrice Vance, slammed her heavy wooden gavel down onto the desk.

"Order in the court," Judge Vance commanded sternly. "In the matter of the State versus Gavin Pierce, Mason Gable, and Charlotte Gable, the court has reviewed the grand jury indictments and the overwhelming forensic evidence submitted by the prosecution."

Judge Vance looked over her glasses at Gavin with utter disgust.

"Mr. Pierce," Judge Vance stated, "you demonstrated an appalling level of arrogance, physical cruelty, and financial greed. You physically assaulted your spouse, conspired to strip her of her legal rights, and engaged in systematic corporate fraud to deceive investors."

"Your Honor, please..." Gavin’s public defender tried to interject.

"Silence, counsel!" Judge Vance barked. "Gavin Pierce, on the charges of felony assault and battery, you are sentenced to eight years in state prison. On the charges of corporate fraud and grand larceny, you are sentenced to an additional twelve years, to be served consecutively. Total sentence: twenty years without the possibility of parole for the first twelve."

Gavin let out a choked, hollow gasp, dropping his head onto the defense table as he began to weep silently.

"Mason Gable," Judge Vance continued, "for your role as the architect of the financial fraud, you are sentenced to fifteen years in state prison. Charlotte Gable, for conspiracy and wire fraud, you are sentenced to ten years."

CRACK!

The gavel echoed through the silent courtroom like a final, unyielding judgment.

Bailiffs stepped forward, pulling Gavin, Mason, and Charlotte up from their seats, leading them toward the dark iron holding doors at the side of the room.

Gavin turned his head back one last time, looking at me sitting in the front row beside my father.

I didn't glare at him. I didn't smile.

I simply stood up, adjusted my tailored blazer, and turned my back on him forever.
