Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

By nine o'clock that evening, the top floor suite of the Peninsula Hotel in downtown Chicago was transformed into a staging ground for Gavin Pierce’s grandest illusion.

Gavin sat in front of a full-length mirror, adjusting his bespoke ten-thousand-dollar Tom Ford tuxedo. Charlotte stood behind him, wearing a dazzling twenty-carat diamond necklace that Gavin had bought on credit three hours earlier in anticipation of the morning’s payout.

Mason Vance was sitting at the marble desk in the corner, furiously reviewing SwiftFreight’s financial ledgers on his laptop.

"Everything is set for tomorrow morning, right, Mason?" Gavin asked, smoothing his lapels in the mirror. "No compliance issues?"

Mason paused, a slight frown touching his forehead as he stared at his laptop screen.

"It’s strange, Gavin," Mason murmured, rubbing his temples. "I tried to log into our off-shore accounts in Nevis twenty minutes ago to verify the escrow routing numbers for tomorrow’s wire transfer."

"And?" Gavin asked, not turning around.

"The server threw a strange code," Mason muttered. "It said 'Account Under Sovereign Review.' I called our private banker in Zurich, but his line went straight to an automated legal hold recording."

Gavin waved his hand dismissively. "It’s just standard pre-closing audit protocol. Crestview probably placed a temporary international verification hold on our accounts to prepare the six-billion-dollar liquidity transfer. They’re a fifty-billion-dollar fund, Mason. They do everything by the book."

"Yeah... yeah, you're probably right," Mason agreed, though a subtle knot of anxiety began to twist in his stomach. "Still, I wish our legal counsel was allowed in the signing room tomorrow."

"Crestview’s invitation explicitly stated that only the primary corporate officers—CEO, CFO, and PR Director—are permitted in the Executive Boardroom," Charlotte pointed out, admiring her diamond necklace in the mirror. "They want total secrecy so the Wall Street Journal doesn't break the story before the opening bell."

"Exactly," Gavin agreed, standing up and pulling on his polished leather dress shoes. "Tomorrow morning at eight AM, we walk into Crestview Tower as regional executives, and we walk out as global titans."

He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window of the penthouse suite, looking out over the magnificent skyline of Chicago.

In the distance, rising high above the surrounding buildings, the massive crest of Crestview Tower burned bright blue against the night sky.

Gavin raised his glass toward the skyscraper. "To Crestview," he toasted softly.

He had no idea that forty floors up inside that very skyscraper, a team of fifty federal forensic accountants, corporate prosecutors, and sovereign risk analysts were working through the night under my direct command.

On the primary display screen of the central command unit hung three massive digital files labeled in bold red text:

PROJECT SWIFTFREIGHT: FORENSIC FRAUD LEDGER

RECORDING_PEN_AUDIO_EVIDENCE_GAVIN_PIERCE.MP4

CRIMINAL INDICTMENT DRAFTS: SEC & DOJ FILE #9082

I stood near the glass wall of the command center, wearing a sleek black jumpsuit, holding a cup of steaming black coffee.

Arthur Vance walked up beside me, handing me a thin tablet.

"The Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has just signed the emergency freeze warrants, Miss Vance," Arthur reported smoothly. "The moment Gavin Pierce sets foot inside our boardroom tomorrow morning, all three hundred of SwiftFreight’s domestic operating accounts, along with their offshore holding trusts, will be seized by federal marshals."

"And the loan guarantees Mason Vance bragged about?" I asked, sipping my coffee.

Arthur let out a quiet, ruthless chuckle. "Because the loans were issued using fraudulent corporate financial statements provided by Mason himself, the lending banks have declared the debt instantly defaulted against the corporate officers personally. The forty million dollars doesn't belong to you, Sabrina. It now belongs entirely to Gavin Pierce and Mason Vance as personal joint liabilities."

I looked out at the glowing lights of the city.

"Eight AM tomorrow, Arthur," I murmured.

"The trap is primed, Chairwoman," Arthur bowed his head.
