Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

The boardroom was vast, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.

Seated around a forty-foot oval conference table made of rare black marble were twenty-four senior partners of Crestview Partners.

At the head of the table sat Victor Miller—the legendary Chairman of Crestview—his grey eyes watching Gavin Pierce with an expression of absolute, terrifying coldness.

Gavin’s face lit up with awe. He recognized Victor Miller immediately from the covers of Forbes and Bloomberg Magazine.

"Chairman Miller!" Gavin exclaimed, stepping forward with a wide, professional smile, extending his hand as he approached the table. "It is an absolute honor to meet you in person, sir! I am Gavin Pierce, CEO of SwiftFreight Logistics! On behalf of my entire executive team, we are thrilled to finalize this historical acquisition deal with Crestview!"

Victor Miller did not stand up. He did not extend his hand. He simply sat motionless, staring at Gavin’s outstretched hand as if it were covered in sewage.

Gavin’s hand hung in the air for three long, agonizing seconds. His smile froze, a flicker of deep embarrassment crossing his face as he slowly lowered his arm.

"Uh... Chairman Miller?" Gavin stammered, coughing nervously into his fist. "Is there... is there an issue with the pre-closing documentation? My CFO, Mason Vance, brought all the certified stock registers."

From the side shadows of the boardroom, a quiet, smooth voice echoed across the silent room:

"There is no issue with the documentation, Gavin."

Gavin froze. His head snapped toward the corner of the boardroom.

A high-backed leather chair turned slowly around from the floor-to-ceiling glass window.

Sitting in the chair, dressed in a tailored midnight-blue executive suit, wearing a stunning black diamond pendant around her neck, was me.

My dark hair was pulled back into a flawless, sleek bun. My posture was regal, commanding, and absolute.

Gavin’s eyes bulged out of his head. His mouth dropped open in complete, chaotic shock.

"Sa... Sabrina?!" Gavin gasped, taking two staggering steps backward, pointing a trembling finger at me. "What the hell are you doing here?! How did you get into this building?!"

Charlotte gasped loudly, clutching her chest. "Gavin! Why is your broke ex-wife sitting in Crestview’s boardroom?!"

Mason Vance’s face drained of all color as he looked from me to Chairman Victor Miller, a sudden, horrifying wave of dread crashing over his mind.

I stood up slowly from my chair, resting my hands on the polished surface of the black marble table.

"You're standing in my office, Gavin," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and echoing with absolute authority.

"Your office?!" Gavin yelled hysterically, looking around at the silent, stone-faced senior partners. "Are you insane?! Chairman Miller, I apologize for this crazy woman! She is my newly divorced ex-wife! She must have snuck past your ground floor security! She’s mentally unstable!"

Victor Miller finally spoke. His baritone voice boomed through the room like thunder:

"Shut your mouth, you pathetic worm."

Gavin flinched as if he had been slapped across the face. "Sir?!"

Victor Miller stood up slowly, stepping over to stand directly beside me, placing his arm protectively around my shoulders.

"Allow me to introduce you to the Vice-Chairwoman of Crestview Partners," Victor Miller said, his eyes burning into Gavin’s soul. "My daughter. Sabrina Miller Vance."
