Chapter 9 - The Execution

The boardroom fell into a silence so dense it felt as though the oxygen had been sucked out of the room.
Gavin’s jaw hung open. His eyes darted wildly between my father and me, his brain completely failing to process the reality crushing down upon him.
"Daughter...?" Gavin choked out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic squeak. "Daughter?! No... no! That’s impossible! Her father was a retired high school principal from Iowa! She came from nothing!"
"My daughter allowed you to believe whatever lie suited your pathetic vanity, Mr. Pierce," my father stated coldly. "She wanted to see if you were a man worthy of standing beside her. You proved to be a worthless, abusive coward."
"No... no!" Charlotte screamed, her voice shrill with panic as she grabbed Gavin’s arm tightly. "Gavin! Tell me this isn't true! Tell me she’s lying!"
"Mason..." Gavin rasped, turning frantically to his CFO. "Mason! What about the deal?! What about the 3.2 billion dollars?!"
Mason Vance looked like a corpse standing in a suit. His briefcase dropped from his trembling hand, hitting the marble floor with a loud THUD.
"There is no 3.2 billion dollars, Gavin," I said softly, stepping around the table toward them. "Crestview never intended to invest a single penny into SwiftFreight."
I pulled a small remote control from my pocket and clicked it once.
The massive high-definition presentation monitors on the wall lit up instantly.
Audio roared through the high-end boardroom speakers—crystal clear, high-fidelity sound recorded from my fountain pen and lapel camera:
CRACK.
Gavin’s voice boomed through the room: "That's for the Mercedes, you jealous bitch!"
Charlotte’s voice followed: "Her skin is so tough anyway... Look at her—she hasn't even shed a single tear."
Then came Mason Vance’s voice from yesterday morning: "We systematically moved his personal liquidity out of the marital estate... transferred equity into offshore trusts in Nevis... tied forty million dollars in corporate mezzanine loans directly against your joint marital guarantees!"
Gavin stared at the screen in pure, unadulterated horror as the video played in four-thousand-pixel resolution, displaying every strike of the belt, every laugh from Charlotte, and every fraudulent confession from Mason.
"You... you recorded us?" Gavin whispered, his knees trembling so violently he could barely stay upright.
"Every second, Gavin," I said smoothly. "And while you were busy popping champagne at your office yesterday celebrating your 'five-billion-dollar win,' my father and I handed those recordings over to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Department of Justice."
BANG.
The double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Eight federal marshals and four IRS criminal investigation agents marched into the room, led by the Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
"Gavin Pierce, Mason Vance, and Charlotte Gable!" the prosecutor announced cleanly. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to evade income taxes, corporate asset stripping, and aggravated felony assault!"
"No! Please!" Charlotte shrieked, bursting into hysterical tears as two female marshals grabbed her arms, forcing her hands behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists. "I didn't do anything! It was all Gavin! He made me do it!"
"Charlotte!" Gavin yelled in disbelief as his mistress immediately threw him under the bus.
"Don't touch me, you broke monster!" Charlotte screamed, kicking at the carpet as she was dragged away. "He hit her with a belt! I saw him do it! I’ll testify! I’ll tell the judge everything!"
Mason Vance collapsed onto his knees, weeping silently into his hands as the agents locked handcuffs around his wrists. "My career... my family... everything is gone..."
Gavin stood alone in the center of the room, surrounded by armed federal officers.
He looked at me through a blur of terrified, pathetic tears.
"Sabrina..." Gavin sobbed, sinking to his knees before me, pressing his forehead against the cold marble floor. "Sabrina, please! I was wrong! I was seduced by Charlotte! She manipulated me! Please, for the sake of our six years of marriage! Ask your father to stop this! I’ll be your servant! I’ll do anything you want!"
I walked over, stopping right in front of his bowed head.
I looked down at the man who had hit me with a belt forty-eight hours ago.
"You told me on Wednesday night that weak people get crushed in high finance, Gavin," I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear my words. "You were right. You just didn't realize who the weak one was."
I stepped around him, walking toward my father’s side.

"Take them away," Victor Miller ordered coldly.
The marshals grabbed Gavin by his collar, dragging his screaming, weeping body out of the boardroom, his high-end Tom Ford tuxedo scuffing against the polished floor.
