Chapter 5 - The Live Broadcast

The Grand Ballroom of the Metropolitan Hotel was blinded by the glare of dozens of stage lights. Over two hundred journalists, major real estate magnates, and local political figures sat in elegant rows, their chatter filling the cavernous space. Camera operators from major news networks stood on elevated risers at the back, broadcasting live across national syndicates.
On stage, standing behind a polished wooden podium emblazoned with the logo of Hullbrook Enterprises, stood Grant Hullbrook. He looked immaculate in a tailored dark suit, his hair perfectly styled, his demeanor oozing calculated confidence. Beside him, sitting proudly in the front row, was Brittany Mercer, wearing a modest, elegant dress designed to project the image of a supportive corporate executive.
Grant cleared his throat, leaning into the bank of microphones.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and members of the press," Grant began, his voice dropping into a well-rehearsed tone of solemn sincerity. "Thank you for joining me today. Before I announce the revolutionary expansion of our downtown development project, I must address a deeply painful personal matter that has made headlines over the last forty-eight hours."
The room went completely silent. Journalists leaned forward, clicking their pens and raising their recording devices.
Grant lowered his head, feigning emotional heavy-heartedness. "As many of you know, my beloved wife, Caroline, is seven months pregnant with our first child. What many of you do not know is that for the past several months, Caroline has been fighting a severe, heartbreaking mental health crisis."
In the front row, Brittany wiped away a fake tear, dabbing her eye with a tissue.
"It breaks my heart to say this," Grant continued, his voice trembling with practiced emotion, "but despite my best efforts to protect her at home, her condition has deteriorated into severe psychosis and paranoia. Yesterday, under the guidance of top medical professionals, I had to make the most painful decision of my life: to have her admitted to a specialized care facility for her own safety and the safety of our unborn daughter."
A low murmur swept through the audience. Reporters were already furiously typing on their laptops, drafting headlines about the tragedy of the Hullbrook family.
"I ask the press for privacy during this painful time," Grant said, raising his eyes to the cameras with a tragic smile. "My priority must remain on protecting my child and preserving what remains of my family's legacy. Now, regarding the financial future of Hullbrook Enterprises—"
BOOM.
The massive, ten-foot-tall double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom slammed open, crashing against the wooden walls with a thunderous echo that cut Grant off mid-sentence.
Every camera operator involuntarily swung their heavy lenses toward the rear of the room. The journalists turned in their seats, gasping.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the bright light of the lobby, was Arthur Vance. He wore a bespoke dark coat, his face set in an expression of absolute, terrifying authority. Beside him, dressed in a striking midnight-blue maternity gown, holding her head high with unyielding dignity, was Caroline.
And flanking them were four uniformed state police officers along with Victoria Sterling.
Grant’s breath caught in his throat. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edges of the podium. "Caroline?" he whispered, his microphone picking up the shocked tremor in his voice.
Brittany jumped up from her front-row seat, her face draining of all color.
"What is the meaning of this?" Grant yelled into the microphone, trying desperately to regain control of the room. "Security! Remove these people! My wife is medically compromised and escaped from a facility!"

Arthur Vance didn't raise his voice. He simply walked down the central aisle, his heavy footsteps echoing through the silent ballroom. Caroline walked beside him, her hand resting calmly on her stomach, her eyes locked onto the man who had tried to ruin her.
"Keep the cameras rolling," Arthur said, his deep voice carrying clearly across the entire room without the aid of a microphone. "Every single one of you. Because you are about to witness the truth."
