Chapter 2 - The Call That Shook Chicago

The phone didn’t even ring twice. On the other end of the line, the connection snapped open with the instant, sterile precision of a military-grade satellite relay.
“Claire?”
The voice was deep, smooth, and laced with an immediate, razor-sharp intensity that could freeze molten steel. It was the voice of a man who commanded legions, controlled global commodity markets, and made geopolitical treaties over breakfast.
“Dad,” Claire said, her voice cracking just slightly before hardening back into absolute steel.
Thousands of miles away, in a penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of Manhattan—or perhaps aboard a private transatlantic flight high above the Atlantic—Jonathan Ellison’s entire demeanor shifted. The billionaire patriarch, a man whose name was whispered with reverent terror in boardrooms from Wall Street to Tokyo, felt every muscle in his body lock.
“What happened?” Jonathan demanded. The casual warmth of a father evaporated instantly, replaced by the lethal focus of a apex predator whose cub had been cornered.
Claire stood tall in the center of the Mercer study, her bare feet planted firmly on the Persian rug. She looked directly into Adrian’s mocking, arrogant eyes, watching the way his chest puffed out with ignorant pride.
“Just like you told me,” Claire said, her words dropping into the phone like falling lead weights. “Destroy his life.”
Adrian let out another sharp laugh, leaning back against the edge of his mahogany desk. He waved a dismissive hand at her phone, signaling to Vanessa that this whole pathetic display was merely a desperate bluff.
“Oh, wonderful!” Adrian mocked loudly, projecting his voice so the person on the other end could hear. “Daddy’s little girl is calling for help! Who is it, Claire? Is the old man going to send a sternly worded letter? Maybe a hundred grand to make me go away?”
Vanessa giggled, taking another sip of her scotch. “Tell daddy we need the money by tomorrow morning, darling. Lawyers aren't cheap.”
Jonathan Ellison heard every single word through the encrypted audio feed. In the absolute silence of his private study, a terrifying, humorless smile touched the corners of the old man’s mouth. The beast had been poked. The golden rule had been broken.
Jonathan’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper. “Are you safe?”
“Yes,” Claire replied, her eyes never leaving Adrian’s face.
“Good.” A pause hung in the air—short, heavy, and absolute. “Give me five minutes.”
The line went dead.
Claire lowered the phone to her side, the screen fading to black. She stood motionless, her shoulders squared, her blood-stained hand hanging loosely at her side.
Adrian grinned triumphantly, crossing his arms over his chest. He looked at Vanessa, shaking his head in mock pity. “Five minutes? Did you hear that? The old man needs five minutes! Should I pack my bags now, sweetheart? Should I tremble in fear?”
“Pathetic,” Vanessa murmured, stepping forward to adjust the lapel of Adrian’s shirt. “She’s completely delusional, Adrian. She really thinks her family has power in this city. She forgot that the only reason anyone knows her last name is because you elevated her.”
Adrian chuckled, reaching out to stroke Vanessa’s cheek affectionately, entirely ignoring the bleeding, battered woman standing five feet away. “She’s always lived in a fantasy world. That’s why I had to bring her down to earth. Now, let’s finish this. Sign the papers, Claire, or I’ll make sure your father spends his final years bankrupt and broken.”
Claire glanced up at the antique grandfather clock standing against the mahogany-paneled wall. The heavy brass second hand began its slow, relentless journey around the enameled face.
Tick. Tick. Tick.
“No,” Claire said softly.
Adrian frowned. “What did you say?”
May you like
Claire lifted her chin, the blood on her face only accentuating the terrifying, aristocratic coldness in her eyes.
“You should be terrified.”
